Phil Spencer: Xbox Failed To Release Enough Games In 2022

Phil Spencer Takes The Blame For Xbox!

Microsoft has struggled to keep up with Sony and Nintendo’s first-party output for many years. But 2022 was promised to change things for Xb ox, with Starfield leading the charge and more exciting games following suit.

Unfortunately, Starfield was delayed further into 2023, and Xbox fans were left waiting once again. In a new interview, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming and Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, took the blame for disappointing the fans.

Xbox Head Phil Spencer

Phil Spence also addressed the less-than-stellar first-party output from Xbox. He said:

“Our commitment to our fans is that we need to have a steady release of great games that people can play on our platform, and we didn’t do enough of that in 2022.”

“And fundamentally, that’s on me. I’m the head of the business.”

In 2020, Microsoft announced several first-party titles for the current generation of Xbox consoles. This included Avowed, Fable, State of Decay 3, and more. However, Microsoft has not been able to release most of these games.

Games like Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 were announced as early as 2019, but no release date has been specified for Ninja Theory’s latest title. Much of this could have been caused by the pandemic and the problematic working conditions in the past years, but fans were not satisfied with Microsoft’s game releases last year.

However, 2022 was not completely disappointing. Xbox released smaller games like Pentiment and As Dusk Falls. Game Pass also continued to do well, and Xbox saw the highest monthly active users in the platform’s history.

Recently, Microsoft has also started the Xbox Developer Direct. The first showcase revealed release dates for Minecraft Legends and Redfall and several minutes of deep-dive gameplay segments from the developers.

The much-anticipated Starfield is finally coming this year. Redfall is releasing on 2nd May, and Forza Motorsport is also slated for 2023. Phil Spencer believes that it is essential to reveal dates. He stated:

“It is important to show games, to show dates.”

Xbox Redfall Starfield

In 2023, Xbox is already off to a great start. The gaming giant has just released Hi-Fi Rush, a brand-new game from Tango Gameworks, and it has become an instant hit among gaming fans and enthusiasts.

The future is looking better than ever for Xbox, but Microsoft must deliver on its promises from several years ago. Games like Starfield are crucial for Xbox, especially because of the stiff competition from Sony and Nintendo coming up with games like Spider-Man 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom.
