PlayStation Currently Dominates The Console Space!

Story Highlight
  • PlayStation makes up to 80% of global AAA single-player game launch sales on consoles.
  • Analyst claims this data comes from the average result of various global data suppliers.
  • This remark comes amid debates about GTA 6 selling more pre-order copies on PS5 than Xbox Series X|S.

Reports about GTA 6 pre-orders selling 6 to 8 times more on PS5 than Xbox Series X|S sparked a wider discussion in the industry about overall console game sales across both platforms.

Xbox tried to remedy the debate by calling the GTA 6 pre-order rumors fake, but average data comparing new AAA single-player console releases appears to massively favor PlayStation.

A credible industry analyst claims that PlayStation accounts for up to 80% of AAA game launch sales on consoles, leaving the remaining measly 20% for Xbox.

Why it matters: If this average data is anything to go by, PlayStation holds an overwhelming market share in premium single-player releases compared to Xbox. It explains why the latter has struggled to secure its place in the console space in the last few years.

PlayStation accounts for up to 80% of console AAA game launch sales, an analyst claims.

This tidbit comes via Christopher Dring on Twitter, a credible and trusted industry analyst. He averaged his data from multiple global suppliers and found that PlayStation tends to hog 75% to 80% of new AAA single-player console launch games compared to Xbox.

I used the word sales, not players. It’s based on pretty much every data supplier I have access to… I averaged it out. […] It’s global. Not UK.

-Analyst, Christopher Dring.

This number gets less skewed in PlayStation’s favor when it comes to multiplayer titles. Additionally, the figure relies on a ballpark guesstimate based on global aggregated data, but it still reflects the global average for AAA console titles at launch.

Xbox Games and Console
Xbox needs to make a strong enough comeback in the next console generation to survive in the market.

PlayStation’s larger player base compared to Xbox is also partially to blame for this disparity. If Xbox doesn’t recover with popular releases and smarter business choices, this imbalance could only worsen in the next console generation.

Do you think this figure is another way of saying that PlayStation has a better grip on the console gaming space over Xbox at the moment? Do you agree with this assessment? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
