Amazon Boss Believes $1,000+ Consoles Could Benefit Cloud Gaming

Is Cloud Gaming The Future?

Story Highlight
  • Amazon Gaming boss thinks the more expensive consoles could help cloud gaming.
  • With the Steam Machine costing $1,000+, Xbox Helix and PS6 could follow suit.
  • He thinks that due to the sheer price, people could move towards game streaming.

The memory crisis has led to some of the most unreal tech prices we’ve ever seen. Home consoles that used to cost around $500 have shot up to $700-$800, and the upcoming next-gen consoles are tipped to be priced over $1,000.

Amid all this, Amazon Games executive says that $1,000+ consoles could benefit cloud gaming platforms like Amazon Luna. He says that when consoles go beyond the purchasing power of regular audiences, they will shift to cloud gaming.

Why it matters: This is indeed true considering the selling factor for consoles is their price and accessibility, but when that point is lost, people will, in theory, look for cheaper alternatives like cloud gaming software.

I do think you get to a point at which more people will be in the consideration set for a cloud gaming solution, just because of the sheer cost of buying dedicated hardware

Talking to The Game Business, Jeffrey Gattis talked about how the more expensive consoles could lift cloud gaming. He sees a future where people might skip hardware due to the sheer prices and switch to game streaming.

Game streaming could be an alternative to hardware prices

Amazon is already trying to capitalize on this as it has started pairing Amazon Luna with Prime Video, albeit you need a Fire TV Stick for that. He said Luna’s goal isn’t to replace consoles, because they have enough hardware already.

But now that the Steam Machine has launched for $1,000+, and PS6 and Xbox Helix are expected to cost a similar amount, he sees cloud gaming taking off. However, the service has indeed become a lot better, but it still has a long way to go.
