PS5 Pro Deemed Unnecessary Refresh By Developers At GDC

Devs Believe Base PS5 Hasn't Been Fully Pushed Yet!

Story Highlight
  • PS5 Pro is rumored to release this year with a 50% rasterization uplift.
  • Developers at GDC 2024 don’t appear to be impressed by the consoles.
  • They believe the base console has not been pushed to its maximum ability yet.

Sony is almost ready to release its mid-gen refresh, the PS5 Pro. The console is thought to be a powerful upgrade as it is marketed to be around 50% faster and boasts much better ray tracing capabilities.

However, while it may look good on paper, developers do not appear too impressed. Following recent leaks, developers at GDC 2024 believe the console is not much of an upgrade, making it less than necessary.

Why it matters: Last generation, the PS4 Pro offered a much bigger performance jump.

During GDC, the head of GamesIndustry.biz, Chris Dring, asked the opinion of different developers about Sony’s upcoming console.

After consultation with different people, he got the impression that PS5 Pro won’t be too big of a deal for professionals.

I didn’t meet a single person who understood the point of it.

-Chris Dring

He asserted that fans would get the upgraded console, and Sony would be able to benefit from marketing. However, developer sentiment is quite the opposite.

According to Chris Dring, most believe that the base console is yet to be fully explored. Therefore, they don’t see much of a point in Sony’s decision to make a new console.

Reports state PlayStation is preparing for GTA 6. However, analysts have concluded that the console would not offer 60FPS gameplay if this frame rate is not possible on the base hardware.

Overall, Chris Dring seems to have concluded that most people do not see the PS5 Pro moving the needle much. Therefore, it will have a marginal impact on market growth.

The PS5 Pro has always been a point of contention. Many have argued that Xbox’s decision to skip the race was wise since these consoles are already quite capable.

However, with how fast the technology is evolving, it is difficult to say anything for certain. For the time being, we know that the PS5 Pro is coming later this year and should be unveiled in just a few more months.
