Ubisoft has gone through a major reset, and such a direction resulted in their Halifax and Stockholm offices being shut down in addition to 6 upcoming projects being shelved, which includes the highly anticipated Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake.

Now, the French publisher has laid out its plans for the future and will be working on a new operating model. This said model is centered around open-world and live-service games, supported by player-facing generative AI.

Why it matters: Live-service is a venture Ubisoft has failed in occasionally, and even after they’ve hit rock bottom, the publisher is still committed to going down this path.

Ubisoft’s latest press release reads:

The new operating model will further empower the execution of the Group’s strategy, centered on Open World Adventures and GaaS-native experiences, supported by – accelerated investments behind
player-facing Generative AI. 

The open-world part makes sense; it is what the French-based company is known for. However, for the live-service part, the genre is risky, and Ubisoft has hardly found success going that route

Nevertheless, Ubisoft still believes in a future for live-service games and even went so far as to say that the single-player formula is outdated. Furthermore, they’re also interested in Generative AI and said that it’s a big gaming revolution, as 3D was.

As part of this restructuring, Ubisoft has also created dedicated ‘Creative Houses’ for each genre. CH3 is tasked with live-service games that include IPs like: The Crew, For Honour, Brawlhalla, Skulls and Bones, and Riders Republic.

Even after 6 cancellations, Ubisoft is working on 4 new IPs, and we expect at least one of them to be a live-service title.
