Nvidia’s reputation hasn’t been the best in recent months, following the company’s criticism for being anti-consumer-friendly. There were reports that it is killing off its popular GPUs to maximize profits and cater more to AI data centers.
Now, another new controversy has arisen, which could create more trouble for the tech giants. Some court documents reveal that Nvidia greenlit a deal with a company that sells pirated documents to train its AI models.
Why it matters: Nvidia has been very AI-first ever since the tech became more mainstream, and to train its LLM models, it might have gone too far, even striking illegal deals to go up and beyond its competitors.
Torrentfreak has accessed legal court documents that reveal what exactly happened. Apparently, Nvidia had to meet a strict guideline to train its LLMs, for which it went so far as to try to gain access to illegal documents.
It contacted Anna’s Archives, a copyright-infringing site that obtains documents illegally and sells them. It has a bunch of books, research articles, and more that Nvidia was reportedly interested in.
Despite being warned about the nature of the site by Anna’s Archives itself, Nvidia’s management reportedly greenlit the deal, sparking massive controversy. Now, it isn’t clear if the deal actually stood, but it does seem so.
This gives Nvidia a really bad look, considering the stature of the company. If the deal indeed fell through, it could face new lawsuits, which could put it into some huge issues in the future.
