Lenovo has finally confirmed that the serious problems caused by the N3CN42WW BIOS update on the original Legion Go were not the fault of users. After further investigating reports, the company has acknowledged that the official BIOS update could have made the console practically unusable, with the device failing to complete the boot process and showing nothing but a black screen. The only sign of life was the red power LED, suggesting that the handheld was still receiving power but could no longer start properly.
The new information comes from Daniel_Legion, a Lenovo representative who engaged in the company’s internal forums. According to the information provided, Lenovo was ultimately able to duplicate the issue internally in its European L2.5 lab. All three computers used in these tests failed after installing BIOS version N3CN42WW, indicating that the problem is not merely caused by owners mistakenly conducting the BIOS update process.

But the behavior is not completely consistent. Other Lenovo teams have installed the same BIOS on several Legion Go systems without encountering the issue. This might also explain why thousands of units were able to properly upgrade while others remained inoperable. Lenovo is now working on two major hypotheses. The first is that a specific motherboard component is only used in certain production batches, or that the issue requires a specific set of conditions to manifest.
This also considerably reduces the scope of the problem. BIOS N3CN42WW was designed for the original Lenovo Legion Go 8APU1, including configurations with AMD Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme processors. It does not affect the Legion Go S or Legion Go 2.
Furthermore, the incorrect update was not distributed automatically by Windows Update or Legion Space. It has to be manually downloaded from Lenovo’s support page to be installed. This download has since been withdrawn, and Lenovo is once again releasing the previous BIOS N3CN40WW.

The acknowledgment has a substantial impact on affected owners. Lenovo now specifically emphasizes that these incidents should not be considered a user mistake. A Legion Go device still under warranty should be repaired using the regular warranty procedure. This is significant because it prevents the possibility of Lenovo claiming that the gadget was rendered inoperable due to an inaccurate update.
But what is interesting is what happens to devices whose warranties have already expired. Regarding this, Daniel_Legion claims that because the owner did not create the fault, out-of-warranty gadgets should likewise be repaired for free; however, he cautions that each client should check the applicable legislation in their country.
This is precisely one of the main points that still requires clarification. This statement was issued in response to an owner in Romania, who was protected by European Union consumer law, and Lenovo has yet to formally announce a global repair program or a specific recall campaign for all affected Legion Go devices.
