Story Highlight
  • Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, the director of Blood of Dawnwalker, is tired of big open worlds.
  • Instead of being bloated in scale, the upcoming RPG will have a smaller map, but will be filled with content.
  • The director cited Gothic and Baldur’s Gate 3 as inspirations, stating his RPG will focus on narrative and player agency.

In the recent past, many role-playing titles have succeeded because of rich and massive open worlds with countless activities for the player to get lost in. Arguably, Crimson Desert is the most prominent example of this trend, with its humongous scale engaging fans for more than 200 hours.

However, not every creative is a fan of bloated game worlds, and The Witcher 3 director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz holds this same opinion, choosing to focus on player agency and narrative for his exciting RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker.

Why it matters: Big open-worlds have their charm, but the industry is longing for an RPG that focuses more on narrative and consequences from in-game choices rather than exploration.

The director cited Baldur’s Gate 3 as an inspiration.

While talking to GamesRadar, Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz revealed that he is tired of big game worlds and prefers condensed experiences that are more focused. The Blood of Dawnwalker director insisted he enjoys open-world titles, but games like Baldur’s Gate 3 that maximise freedom of choice and the narrative are more to his liking.

I feel tired with games that are way too big. I don’t have that much time, and I prefer more condensed experiences, but I still enjoy open worlds.

Tomaszkiewicz’s upcoming RPG will follow this same pattern. Instead of imploring the player to meander in an open world with no end, the director stated Blood of Dawnwalker instead wants players to experience the narrative sandbox around them and engage with the characters and storylines while making their own choices.

The Witcher 3 lead also cited the Gothic games as an inspiration, saying that even though they had small worlds, the titles were filled with quests, storylines, and strong characters that left a mark.

The Blood of Dawnwalker will boast a narrative with consequences for your choices.

Because of the studio’s size and the concept’s effectiveness, the upcoming RPG will have a similar scope and design, according to Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz. Hence, instead of having empty spaces to traverse, The Blood of Dawnwalker will have a smaller world filled with content and narratives.
