Wasting So Much Precious Hardware In RAM Shortage Era!

Story Highlight
  • A former tech firm employee says the company plans to destroy more than 100 MacBook Pro units with 48GB of RAM.
  • The laptops are said to be headed for destruction following employee layoffs instead of being sold or handed over to someone else.
  • Social media users have criticized the company for wasting precious hardware in an era where consumer memory is incredibly expensive and hard to come by.

With RAM prices getting out of hand and supply being a consistent struggle for all companies worldwide, prices of consumer electronics, including laptops have increased by quite a bit in the last year.

It may come as a surprise then, that a company is somehow gearing up to destroy over 100 MacBook Pros.

Why it matters: RAM shortages have become so intense that companies like Microsoft are now optimizing their OS for 8GB of memory. Because of the timing, letting go of perfectly fine MacBook Pros in this manner is a real shame.

MacBook Pros With 48GB Of Memory Are Extremely Expensive

A recent post on Reddit shares that a tech firm is preparing to destroy more than 100 MacBook Pro laptops.

The most shocking part about this story is that these MacBook Pros are said to be equipped with 48GB of RAM. According to a former employee of said firm, the company is doing so after shutting down an office in the country and laying off over 200 employees.

Of course, this story is so interesting because hardware prices are off the charts right now. A similarly equipped MacBook Pro can easily run customers over $3,000, especially with Apple recently raising hardware prices.

To nobody’s surprise, most Redditors aren’t huge fans of this decision. In fact, they are currently criticizing the company for destroying perfectly usable hardware in today’s world.

One Redditor also pointed out that the firm may have taken this decision to secure a tax write-off as a loss against the laid off employees.

Of course, this isn’t the first time a company has contributed to e-waste on this magnitude. However, the fact that global memory shortages have everyone on their toes makes the timing particularly worse than similar cases from the past.
