- Take-Two boss has called out former Rockstar employees for trying to compete against GTA.
- He says that they tried to make a competitor but were unsuccessful in the attempt.
- This is likely a dig at Build A Rocket Boy studio, which developed MindsEye.
Take-Two is one of the most prestigious publishers in the gaming industry, owning massive franchises like GTA, Borderlands, Red Dead, and more. The cultural effect some of these IPs have had is unmatched, and their CEO has highlighted this.
The company CEO in a recent conference called out some of their “former Rockstar employees”, saying that they tried to make a GTA competitor, but were unsuccessful. This dig is likely aimed towards MindsEye.
Why it matters: Over the years, many studios and even ex-Rockstar employees have tried to compete with GTA, but ultimately couldn’t do it. This includes MindsEye, even Watch Dogs, and a bunch of other titles.

In a Telecom Conference, Strauss Zelnick mentioned that former Rockstar Employees tried to replicate GTA, but couldn’t. This sounds like it’s directed towards the studio Build a Rocket Boy, which was behind MindsEye.
The studio was formed by former Rockstar head Leslie Benzies, who also hired a number of other former developers. They made a big deal about MindsEye, but it not only failed, but was the worst game of 2025.

Now, a big part of why GTA is so big and unmatched is the fact that the studio is provided with full rein of development. The developers are provided free control and almost unlimited budgets to make a wonderful experience.
However, even with that, it isn’t easy to replicate what the studio has made over the years. GTA 5, at this point, is almost 15 years old and is still relevant, but now it is soon to be replaced by its sequel in November.
