Switch 2 Struggles With Unreal Engine 5 After First Taste of Open-World Gameplay With Oblivion Remastered

Drops In Low 20FPS Range And Shows Frequent Stutters!

Story Highlight
  • The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 this week.
  • Early testing of the Unreal Engine 5 title shows that it exhibits frequent stutters and frame-rate dips on the console.
  • Handheld mode is even worse and can freeze for several seconds as it loads the open-world components.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has shown to be quite capable of running AAA titles so far. Even with a hew hiccups along the road, the console can handle many demanding games from the modern era.

With the arrival of Oblivion Remastered this week, the console is set to be tested in a huge Unreal Engine 5 title in a way it hasn’t previously been tested. However, initial signs of the game aren’t looking good so far.

Why it matters: The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to lean more into third-party support, so further optimizations are needed to bring the more demanding titles to the platform.

A video posted using an early copy of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered shows exactly how the game runs on the Nintendo Switch 2 at the moment. The footage highlights the game running with the day-one patch installed.

When not in the open world and exploring interiors, the game runs mostly fine. In these areas, Oblivion Remastered can hold its 30FPS target for the most part, although the game isn’t exempt from poor frame-pacing in these sections.

Things become much worse, however, when exploring the open world. Here, the game frequently drops into the low 20FPS range, and it also experiences major stutters that can be immersion-breaking.

Even when there isn’t a lot going on in the open world, the Nintendo Switch 2 simply struggles to cope with the demands of this Unreal Engine 5 title. Do note that Oblivion Remastered isn’t the best representation of an optimized Unreal Engine 5 title since it had issues on the other consoles and PC as well.

However, it does serve to showcase a sample of what a AAA Unreal Engine 5 title running on Nintendo’s hardware may look like.

Handheld mode tells a similar story, with the video showcasing a major freeze lasting over 2 seconds when playing The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered on the go. All in all, it seems Unreal Engine 5 still has a long way to go before it can run well on the limited hardware of the Nintendo Switch 2.
