Only 8% Of The Participants Refused To Buy A Game That Used AI During Development.

Story Highlight
  • 43% of Steam players are completely fine with developers using AI during production.
  • Over two-thirds of the participants surveyed didn’t have a negative opinion of AI utilisation.
  • However, the players did demand more sincerity from studios regarding how the technology is being used.

Slowly but surely, AI proliferation in the gaming industry is increasing, with gaming powerhouses like Sony now openly supporting the technology. The Japanese giant, alongside companies like Epic, believes AI is an exciting long-term project that will help unleash developers’ true creativity.

Fans have historically opposed the use of AI tools in development, with titles like Crazy Taxi World Tour receiving backlash for incorporating the technology. However, it turns out that almost half of the players don’t really care about the use of AI in video game production.

Why it matters: Almost 50% of Steam players are content with AI implementation during development is a worrying sign for the industry’s future.

As revealed by GameDiscoverCo, 43% of players have no issue buying games with an AI disclosure on Steam. The publication surveyed around 3,800 Steam users regarding AI in their titles, and only 31% of the responses were negative.

23.4% of players said they had absolutely no problem with the technology used in video games, while 19.6% thought AI use was fine. Furthermore, 26% of participants remained neutral, meaning that over two-thirds of Steam users surveyed would still buy a game with an AI disclosure.

To put the response into perspective, only 8.1% of fans explicitly refused to buy a title made using the technology. Despite the concerning result, over half of the participants demanded that studios be more transparent about how AI is used in games, including coding assistants like Claude Code.

AI Use Games Sales Decline
AI Use in game development is already leading to declining sales.

Considering how previous data has suggested that AI use can lead to a 40-60% decrease in sales, this shift in perception is certainly interesting. With gaming giants already incorporating the technology extensively, it will be intriguing to see how fans react if AI tools become even more significant in development.
