Despite Poor Port, Spider-Man 2 Made Over $8 Million In Just Two Days on Steam

Over 150,000 Copies Sold!

Story Highlight
  • Spider-Man 2’s PC port has already earned over $8M in 2 days despite mixed reviews.
  • Estimated sales are around 150,000 copies in two days, based on the price and revenue.
  • Piracy, with an estimated 300,000 downloads, likely impacted potential sales figures.
  • The game’s combined sales across all platforms are approaching 12 million units.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has pulled in over $8 million in sales within just two days of its Steam release, despite receiving mixed reviews for its PC port quality. This strong financial showing underscores the lasting appeal of the Spider-Man brand and the high demand for superhero games, even when they come with technical flaws.

Why it matters: Despite the lower initial player count on PC, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has seemingly been a commercial success.

The $8.2 million figure is particularly impressive given the game’s $59.99 price tag and the negative feedback surrounding its PC performance. The game also needed only two days to achieve that milestone.

The game’s success on Steam is also due to the popularity of its predecessors. Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) and Spider-Man: Miles Morales were both highly successful on PC.

Given the sales number and the game’s price tag, we can estimate that Spider-Man 2 has already sold 150,000 copies on Steam in just two days. It goes on to show how popular a franchise Spider-Man is.

It’s worth noting that the game was cracked immediately after its release, with reports suggesting over 300,000 people downloaded the pirated version. The sales figures might have been much higher had the game not been cracked so early after the launch.

All in all, Spider-Man 2 has been a massive success for Sony, despite its sky-high development cost of $315 million. Within the first 24 hours on PS5, the game sold over 2.5 million copies, setting a new record as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in history.

Modders are currently working on a co-op mode for Spider-Man 2.

As of last year, the game’s lifetime sales have reached over 11 million units on the PS5 alone. Combining the early sales figures on PC, Spider-Man 2 has sold nearly 12 million units in total.

After seeing these numbers, it’ll be interesting to see whether Sony aggressively pushes more PlayStation exclusives to PC. Earlier, it was reported that Sony would follow the same strategy as Microsoft’s multiplatform strategy.

Do you think Sony will bring more PlayStation-exclusive titles to PC after Spider-Man 2’s success on the platform? Drop your thoughts in the comments, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
