Spider-Man 2 Shaping Up To Be Biggest First-Party PS5 Launch

Expected To Dethrone GOW Ragnarok!

With 2023 coming to an end, PlayStation has one final game up its sleeve. Insomniac Games is ready to unleash Spider-Man 2, and the game has already reached the top of PS5 best sellers on Amazon.

As one of the few PlayStation games exclusive to the PS5, the game delivers a noticeable visual leap over its predecessor. It has also become Insomniac’s highest-rated release to date, leading to high expectations for the title.

With all of this excitement and hype backing it up, Spider-Man 2 is expected to be the biggest first-party launch for PlayStation.

Why it matters: The game has been compared to Batman Arkham City, which is considered the pinnacle of superhero games. Therefore, expectations have continued to rise over the past few months.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

At present, God of War Ragnarok holds the record for the biggest PlayStation launch. Last year, the game launched to incredible anticipation, selling over 5.1 million copies in just five days.

Compared to God of War, Spider-Man has a much wider appeal. The character is not limited to the gaming industry, leading to interest from a broader audience when a new game is released.

Games like Final Fantasy 16 have already shown that PS5 exclusives have no trouble selling. The JRPG returned with a new entry this year, selling over 3 million units in less than a week.

Therefore, Spider-Man 2 should not have much trouble achieving higher figures after the current excitement. The PS5 console has also reached a much higher install base this year, currently positioned at over 41.7 million shipped units.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Combining all these factors, Insomniac Games is on track to take over God of War Ragnarok’s record. However, it is important to note that God of War Ragnarok was a cross-generation release. Therefore, PS4 sales likely played a massive role in its success.

Nonetheless,

We believe the addition of characters like Venom has taken the excitement for Spider-Man 2 to new heights. Therefore, there is a high possibility of the game taking over this record and dethroning God of War Ragnarok.
