Ubisoft’s take on pirates and naval combat was extremely well-received in 2013. Assassin’s Creed 4 is still considered one of the best-rated games in the series, motivating Ubisoft to use the gameplay formula for Skull And Bones, a multiplayer pirate game.
While the game was first announced in 2017, it has faced several development hurdles. Following multiple delays and a budget of $120 million, Ubisoft has again announced a new release window.
The French giant has now stated Skull And Bones will be available between January and March 2024.
Why it matters: The game has become one of the worst examples of development hell over the last decade, highlighting the difficulties associated with modern AAA gaming.
According to a recent Ubisoft report, Skull And Bones will be released in Q4 2023-2024, which consists of January and March.
The game has made plenty of progress recently, with Ubisoft conducting a closed beta. Previously, the studio considered a wider release window, which, combined with the recent progress, raised curiosity about a potential launch before the end of 2023.
Since Skull And Bones has already been delayed multiple times, it remains to be seen if Ubisoft will hit its new target for the game. Going by history alone, we remain skeptical about the latest announcement.
Other than this pirate adventure, Ubisoft has delayed another major game to FY2024-2025. While this game remains a mystery, Star Wars Outlaws appears to be the most common guess for now.
If accurate, the open-world Star Wars game would not arrive before April 2024, leaving room for a release window before April 2025.
Nonetheless, we hope this is the last delay for Skull And Bones. We hold the opinion that the game has potential since Assassin’s Creed 4’s naval combat can work quite well in a multiplayer setting.
However, Ubisoft has struggled to decide a definitive direction for the game, constantly going back and forth between different styles of gameplay.
Apart from Skull And Bones, its predecessor, Assassin’s Creed 4, is rumored to be coming back. According to reports, Ubisoft is considering a remake of this game, although nothing is confirmed as of yet.
