New Document Reveals Sony’s Fix for Rising PS5 Costs May Be Selling Fewer Consoles

Don't Expect Any New Promotions or Offers Either!

Story Highlight
  • Sony will manage the increased PS5 costs by simply selling fewer console units.
  • The production costs are now likely so high that they are losing money on sales.
  • There might not be any promotions or offers on PS5 anymore to keep the sales low.

The current console generation has been somewhat unlucky. It started during the pandemic times, so there were mass shortages as the trades were disrupted. Now, due to the AI boom, memory prices are skyrocketing, leading to higher prices.

Unsurprisingly, Sony has been hit by this too, as they had to increase PS5 prices earlier this year. Now, a new document shows that they are planning to fix this situation by just selling lower PS5 consoles.

Why it matters: Despite the slower start, the sales had become so high at one point that they had almost caught up with PS4, but now it seems Sony is expecting them to slow down due to higher hardware costs.

Sony will offset the rising PS5 prices by selling fewer consoles

In an uncovered business document, Sony has revealed that the only way to fix and manage PS5’s growing prices is by focusing less on unit sales and removing promotions. So, don’t expect any good offers on the console soon

During the holidays, we usually get great promotions on consoles; however, that might not happen this year. The memory prices have increased the production costs, and Sony is now fine with selling fewer consoles.

The manufacturing cost has likely increased, leading to a loss when selling consoles

The highlighting point from this report is that the profits will improve if they ship fewer consoles, which suggests that the hardware costs have become so high that the company is likely losing money manufacturing them.

Even then, the current-gen might receive a boost when GTA 6 launches. It will be exclusive to consoles at launch, so we can expect increased sales, but the memory situation will likely continue in 2027, so sales will drop.
