OLED Gaming Monitors: My Take on the Display That Makes Games Feel Alive

Story Highlight
  • OLED screens produce true black levels, which drastically improve the atmosphere in dark or moody game environments compared to standard LCDs
  • These monitors offer faster response times, reducing blur during high-speed action.
  • The immediate boost in immersion generally outweighs its downsides for most users.

I’ve upgraded plenty of gaming hardware over the years. GPUs, keyboards, headsets, even chairs that promised to “improve focus.” Some upgrades felt noticeable, others barely changed the experience. But switching to an OLED gaming monitor is one of those upgrades you notice almost immediately.

It’s not just about higher specs or better marketing buzzwords. The difference shows up the moment you launch a game. Scenes look deeper, colors feel richer, and everything just feels a little more alive. After spending time with one, going back to a regular LCD panel feels like stepping backward.

The Visual Difference Is Hard to Ignore

OLED vs IPS
OLED (Right) vs IPS (Left)

The first thing that stood out to me was how dark scenes finally looked the way they were supposed to. On most traditional monitors, black areas often look gray or slightly washed out. With OLED, black actually looks black.

That might sound like a small change, but it completely changes how certain games feel. Horror games instantly become more tense. Nighttime exploration in open-world titles feels more atmospheric. Even space games look incredible because the darkness of space finally feels real instead of dull.

Bright areas also pop more. Neon signs, explosions, spell effects, and sunsets stand out in a way that makes the screen feel more dynamic. It’s the kind of visual upgrade that makes you stop for a second and just look around in games you’ve already played before.

One thing I didn’t expect was how much OLED improves older games. Even titles that aren’t technically impressive start to look more appealing because the colors and contrast carry a lot of the visual weight.

Games that rely on art style rather than raw graphics benefit the most. Stylized worlds, colorful characters, and dramatic lighting all look sharper and more expressive. It almost feels like replaying games through a new lens.

If you’re someone who jumps between old favorites and new releases, that improvement alone can make the upgrade worthwhile.

Fast Gameplay Feels More Responsive

Visual quality is great, but gaming monitors also need to keep up when things get chaotic. Fast shooters, racing games, and competitive titles demand quick response and smooth motion.

This is another area where OLED surprised me. Motion looks extremely clean, even when the screen is packed with movement. Quick camera turns stay sharp, enemies are easier to track, and overall gameplay just feels smoother.

For competitive players, that clarity can make a real difference during intense moments. It won’t replace skill or practice, but it removes some of the visual distractions that come from slower displays.

The Monitor Becomes the Center of the Setup

Let’s be honest, gaming setups have become part of the hobby itself. People spend time organizing their desks, adding lighting, and trying to build a setup that looks good on camera or just feels satisfying to sit at.

Most OLED gaming monitors lean into that clean aesthetic. Thin bezels, sleek stands, and minimal designs make them feel like a centerpiece rather than just another screen on the desk.

Once everything is set up properly, the monitor naturally becomes the focal point of the entire setup. When the display looks great both on and off, it adds to the overall experience.

Another thing I started appreciating over time was comfort. Gamers often spend long stretches staring at their screens, especially during late-night sessions or long multiplayer runs.

OLED displays generally deliver stable brightness and very clean motion, which helps reduce the visual strain that sometimes happens with lower-quality panels. Pair that with adjustable stands and good viewing angles, and it’s easier to find a comfortable setup for extended play.

It’s one of those benefits you don’t really think about when buying a monitor, but it becomes obvious after weeks of use.

It’s Not Perfect, But It’s Impressive

To be fair, OLED monitors still come with some trade-offs. They tend to cost more than traditional gaming monitors, and some players still worry about long-term durability issues like burn-in. Manufacturers have added protections and improvements over the years, but it’s still something people talk about.

That said, the overall experience is strong enough that many gamers are willing to accept those trade-offs. When the visuals are this good, it’s hard not to appreciate what the technology brings to the table.

In my opinion, OLED gaming monitors represent one of the most noticeable display upgrades available right now. They combine rich colors, deep contrast, and fast performance in a way that genuinely improves how games look and feel.

It’s the kind of upgrade that doesn’t just improve benchmarks or frame graphs. It changes the way you experience your games. Worlds feel more immersive, action feels smoother, and even familiar titles can look fresh again.

WB Games Montréal Undergoes Layoffs, Extent of Cuts Unknown

Story Highlight
  • WB Games Montreal has been hit with an unknown number of layoffs.
  • The studio was last reported to be working on a AAA live-service title based on DC Comics.
  • More layoffs across the entire division are expected once Warner Bros. and Paramount’s deal goes through.

Warner Bros.’ gaming division has become a shell of its former self, going from producing titles like the Arkham trilogy to now failures like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus, which have cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars.

Unfortunately, the repercussions of those actions are still being felt to date, as WB Games’ Montreal office has now apparently been hit with an unknown number of layoffs.

Why it matters: Layoffs are never a good sign for the industry, and to add salt to the wound, Warner Bros. gaming division holds some of the best talent in gaming.

Several developers from the studio have now updated their LinkedIn profiles, announcing their departure. One developer from Motive Studio confirms that WB Games Montreal did indeed face layoffs, right after EA also downsized employees, which was mostly across its Battlefield studios.

It is also important to note that the $110 billion deal between Paramount and Warner Bros. is now underway, and once that happens, expect several cost-cutting measures, and the gaming division won’t be exempt.

Last known, Tech4Gamers came across a job listing from WB Games Montreal that confirmed that the developer was working on a AAA live-service title based on DC Comics

Warner Bros. Has Teased Major Game Releases In 2027 And Beyond

It’s unlikely that the game would be a single-player title, as they’re unlikely to merge live-service elements with it again after the mess that occurred with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

A new Batman game is under development at Rocksteady while Avalanche is busy making a Hogwarts Legacy sequel. That’s the extent of known development across the entire gaming division, but most of the work in development has been cancelled, e.g., the Wonder Woman game at Monolith.

ROG Xbox Ally X Could Gain Up to 30% Performance Boost with Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution

Story Highlight
  • Microsoft plans to launch a preview of its Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) for the ROG Ally X in April.
  • Unlike other upscaling methods, this feature operates at the system level and does not require developers to manually add support for their games.
  • Users can expect performance gains of roughly 30%, though actual results depend on the specific game and its settings.

Good news for gamers using the ROG Xbox Ally X controller: Microsoft will release an update that adds its Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR). Next April, Microsoft will offer a preview of its Auto Super Resolution for the Xbox Ally X.

This update is notable because it adds AI-powered upscaling functionality built into Windows 11, previously available only in the Copilot+ PC ecosystem. The goal is to improve performance (smoothness) without sacrificing visual sharpness. As a result, it’s particularly useful in a portable, console-based computer.

The fundamentals of this technology are similar to those of any other image upscaling solution. Auto SR is equivalent to AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, and Microsoft’s NVIDIA DLSS. It merely reduces the game’s internal resolution to lessen the GPU’s workload before reconstructing the image with an AI model running on the NPU.

This improves performance when running the game at a lower resolution; the NPU also upscales the image back to its original resolution, improving visual appearance.

Baldurs Gate 3 720p Auto SR

To use AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, or NVIDIA DLSS, the game developer must include support for the appropriate technology. In the case of Microsoft, Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is implemented automatically in any game without the developer’s involvement.

In reality, the Xbox Ally X is a natural choice to premiere this Auto SR extension because it has an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme with a dedicated NPU, whereas the standard ROG Xbox Ally lacks this NPU.

Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) upscaling technique promises to significantly increase Xbox One X performance. According to Microsoft documentation, the performance improvement depends heavily on the game, the resolution used, and even whether the game is well-suited to the Auto SR profile. This results in a performance gain of approximately 30%.

Microsoft warns that its Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) technology has limitations in its functionality. It specifically focuses on games that use the DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 APIs. This means it won’t function with older games, but the system has more than enough hardware to run DirectX 9 games, so that’s not a big deal.

Of course, this excludes the OpenGL API, but it also excludes Vulkan. However, it has been stated that it will be compatible with select x64 emulator titles and native Arm64 games. This makes perfect sense for Microsoft Surface devices that use the Snapdragon X Elite and Plus SoCs with integrated NPU.

Furthermore, it lacks HDR support. It may also provide softness to the text and interface. It is also mentioned that it runs best when the game starts at resolutions with fewer than 900 vertical lines, such as 1280 x 800, which is not an issue. It’s a system designed to boost performance in areas where the game might otherwise suffer, so it’s a tiny price to pay.

The most noticeable aspect in terms of context is that Microsoft’s general support page lists Auto SR as a function of Copilot+ PCs equipped with Snapdragon X/X2 SoCs and associated Hexagon NPU.

The official Windows blog and the official ROG Xbox Ally X product page have previously confirmed a special preview of Auto SR with the Ryzen AI NPU. This definitely indicates that Microsoft is expanding Auto SR beyond its first deployment on Snapdragon, and the Ally X serves as a showcase for this growth.

Crimson Desert Predicted To ‘Easily Be The Second Best-Selling Game of the Year’

Story Highlight
  • Forbes has predicted that Crimson Desert will be 2026’s second best-selling game.
  • All the stats and figures point to no other game coming close to it in the 2nd place.
  • Only Rockstar’s behemoth, GTA 6, is expected to eclipse the title in terms of sales.

Crimson Desert is just less than a week away, with the reviews expected a day before the release. However, it has already built up so much hype that it will undoubtedly be a huge financial success, aiming for massive numbers.

A major media outlet already predicts that Crimson Desert will “easily be the second best-selling game of the year’, only trailing behind the obvious GTA 6. No game is expected to come close to Pearl Abyss’s title in the second position.

Why it matters: The final launch trailer released just a couple of days ago and already amassed over 600K views. Additionally, it had already crossed 3 million wishlists 2 weeks before the launch, signalling something big.

Crimson Desert
Crimson Desert predicted to be the 2nd best-seller of the year

Forbes predicts that all these statistics put Crimson Desert as a solid candidate for the second best-selling game of 2026, beating Resident Evil Requiem and other notable big-name releases of the year.

It seems pretty clear at this point that Crimson Desertis easily going to be the second-best-selling game of 2026. You may quickly realize what #1 is going to be

Paul Tassi says a major reason for that is that most other games releasing this year are exclusives like Pokémon Pokopia and Marvel’s Wolverine, and he doesn’t see Requiem beating it either, despite already selling 5 million units

Crimson Desert GOTY
It was also tipped to win the Game of the Year award

While on paper, the stats and previews do point towards both a financial and critical hit, things could change. Unfortunately, the recent Denuvo controversy affected a lot of fans, and if optimization is bad, sales will fall.

Then there is also the fact that, yes, the previews have been positive, but we don’t currently have complete reviews. But if it does live up to the hype and nail all expectations, it really could become the second biggest game of 2026.

What are your thoughts on Crimson Desert becoming the second best-selling game of the year? Let us know your opinions in the comments or join the discussion at the official Tech4Gamers Forum.

Arc Raiders Studio Backtracks On AI Use, Replaces AI-Generated Lines With Voices Of Real Actors

Story Highlight
  • Embark Studios CEO confirms developers have re-recorded some of the AI-generated voice lines since launch.
  • He believes AI is just a production tool meant to test things internally before recording with real actors.
  • The AI use case is not meant to replace real actors in any capacity.

Arc Raiders has cemented itself as one of the most stable live-service releases that the industry has seen in a long time. The game is still going strong to this day, kept alive by a dedicated player base and heaps of meaningful updates.

Embark Studios was initially criticized for using AI-generated voice lines despite the consent of the actors. However, the studio seems to be backtracking on its earlier approach by replacing some of those AI-made lines with voices of real actors since launch.

Why it matters: Arc Raiders is taking more of a moderate approach with AI, unlike many other giant AAA teams in the industry. Players have commended the emphasis on real voice actors, while some argue that the current effort is still not enough.

Arc Raiders
Arc Raiders continues to remain popular and maintain a steady player base.

Speaking to GamesIndustry, Embark Studios CEO Patrick Soderlund explains that the team has rerecorded some of the lines with real voice actors after launch and replaced them with the AI-generated ones. He accepts that there is a noticeable quality difference from AI.

We re-recorded some of the lines post-launch and made them with real voices. There is a quality difference. A real professional actor is better than AI; that’s just how it is.

-Embark Studios CEO, Patrick Soderlund.

He argues that Embark uses AI as a production tool, not to replace real voice actors in most cases. This approach allows the studio to test 15 different voice lines using AI, then record the accepted one with the real voice actor for Arc Raiders.

The studio also pays the voice actors for all the time they spend in the booth and continues to bring them back for updates.

Arc Raiders
Arc Raiders is more rewarding for PvE-oriented players.

For those not in the know, Arc Raiders’ 3-year, $75 million development allegedly only included 70 people. Embark is already working on two new games thanks to the success of the live service project.

Do you think Embark Studios re-recording AI-generated voice lines with real actors after launch is a feasible approach? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

Starfield Composer Says Gamers Weren’t Ready for the RPG, Calls It a Future Classic

Story Highlight
  • Starfield composer says it didn’t do as well as expected because gamers were not ready for the RPG.
  • He believes the game will become legendary in the future, like other Todd Howard projects.
  • The title is expected to get a new wave of attention with its upcoming PS5 launch and 2.0 update.

Starfield launched to a pretty mixed reception. While many players felt impressed by its sheer size and scale, a lack of depth and emergent gameplay made many grow tired of the project quite quickly. This phenomenon was unlike past successful Bethesda releases.

However, the game’s composer believes the players were simply not ready for Todd Howard’s advanced vision at the time of its release. He argues that the open-world experience will soon reach legendary status that is enjoyed by the likes of Skyrim and Oblivion.

Why it matters: Starfield composer implies it’s due to players that the RPG failed to become legendary at launch. He argues players will eventually come to realize their fault, and it will become a future classic.

Starfield
Starfield was criticized for its lack of depth and barren worlds.

In an interview with RPG Site, Inon Zur clarifies that people just did not resonate with Todd Howard’s vision when Starfield came out. He praises the developer, calling him the ‘most creative and invigorating human beings in the industry.’

When Starfield released, I believe people were just not ready for it.

-Inon Zur, Starfield Composer.

The composer believes Todd is sticking to his new vision, and players will come to accept it even if it takes time. As the core philosophy behind the RPG won’t be changing in the future.

Starfield will eventually become something that will be legendary. I have no doubt. It’s just a matter of time.

Regardless, many gamers found the composer’s take to casually brush aside all the genuine criticisms that Starfield has faced since its launch.

Starfield 2.0 Update
The game is expected to get a huge update soon.

Once you experience the story, the open world and gameplay loop eventually become repetitive and unenjoyable for many players.

While the Starfield 2.0 update is expected to turn the ship around, Todd Howard has bluntly said that players who did not originally enjoy the RPG won’t suddenly find themselves fawning over it after the new improvements.

Do you think Starfield will eventually become one of Bethesda’s legendary RPGs like Skyrim, or is the praise unfounded? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

‘Woke’ Medieval Game 1348: Ex Voto Launches to Only 427 Players on Steam

Story Highlight
  • The ‘woke’ medieval project, 1348: Ex Voto, launched to only 427 players on Steam.
  • The game failed to capture the mainstream audience the developers hoped for.
  • It has been rated mixed on Steam, leaving players unsatisfied with its flat story and gameplay.

1348: Ex Voto was surrounded in controversy and gamer backlash ever since it was announced due to its ‘woke’ themes. The single-player third-person project features a ‘masculine lesbian’ who treks through a medieval European setting to save her partner.

The game’s demo saw poor reception last month, but it was hoped that the final launch might fare much better. Well, it came out two days ago and failed to reach even 500 peak players on Steam. Most of the few users who played the experience have also rated it negatively.

Why it matters: The game has been criticized for multiple reasons by the very few players who dived into the experience, with story and combat being the biggest sore spots after its unrealistic setting.

1348: Ex Voto launched to only 427 peak players on Steam.
1348: Ex Voto launched to only 427 peak players on Steam.

As per the Steam tracker, SteamDB, 1348: Ex Voto’s all-time player peak is only sitting at the 427 count. While there might be a bit of an improvement in the coming weekend, the overall decline of players has been quite steep so far.

Only 75 players are experiencing the tumultuous Medieval Italy as Aeta, the protagonist with the bowl cut, at the time of writing. The protagonist is mistaken for a boy throughout her journey in the game.

Besides the controversial story and unrealistic setting, gamers have also criticized the game’s flat combat mechanics and the overall story. Many genuinely found it a bother to go through waves of guards, as the combat system seemed to be actively fighting against you.

The game portrays a lesbian protagonist trekking medieval Europe to save her partner.
The game portrays a lesbian protagonist trekking through medieval Europe to save her partner.

One reviewer even said that the highly difficult ‘Getting Over It’ game was more relaxing than this action-adventure release, dubbing 1348: Ex Voto as a sloppy alpha version of a bad game ‘that was handled by a pack of drunken dry beavers.’

Do you think the game would have seen more of an active player base if it did not include the controversial elements, or was the gameplay loop itself doomed to fail? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

NVIDIA Reportedly Nitpicks Suppliers and Criticizes Minor Issues to Secure AI Chip Deals

Story Highlight
  • A new report reveals that Nvidia now scrutinizes suppliers for issues it previously overlooked.
  • The audit claims this is a psychological tactic to intimidate suppliers to secure more preferable contracts.
  • Nvidia uses this extremely high level of criticism to call out minor process variables and equipment matters.

The AI supply chain is an unforgiving battlefield that has all the tech giants vying for the most beneficial long-term contracts. Nvidia has been the leading figure in this arms race, but a new report shows that the green team is resorting to intimidation tactics with its suppliers.

The company’s recent audit of a key Samsung facility shows that it was involved in an ‘extremely high’ level of criticism. The report claims this nitpicking approach is being used to gain pricing leverage in its contracts.

Why it matters: The Nvidia inspection team’s internal audit reveals that the company reportedly uses intimidation tactics against suppliers to secure unit price reductions in large-scale supply contracts.

Per Business Korea, the green team is using a negotiation policy to pressure suppliers like Samsung and TSMC, which seems to be working out. An inspection team visited Samsung’s Pyeongtaek Campus—which is responsible for HBM processes—and performed an internal audit.

It found an unusually high level of criticism regarding technical details, including minor process variables and equipment matters.

These validation standards were set higher than before, which the audit believes is used to demand unit price reductions in large-scale contracts.

This appears to be a calculated move to psychologically intimidate Samsung Electronics by pointing out technical defects and use this as leverage to demand unit price reductions in large-scale supply contracts.

-Industry Insider.

Nvidia continues to drive the AI arms race globally.

The internal audit also finds that Nvidia used this same tactic with TSMC and SK Hynix in the past. On the flip side, Nvidia could explain the higher-quality qualification process as a new standard to maintain quality in the future.

However, no official comments have been made yet.

On a related note, Nvidia says its future GPUs can boast a million times better path tracing, thanks to AI improvements.

Do you think Nvidia being nitpicky with its suppliers to secure better AI chip deals is a scummy move, or is this tactic justified in the corporate world? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

Nvidia Says Its Future GPUs Will Boast 1,000,000x Better Path Tracing Due to AI Advancements

Story Highlight
  • Nvidia aims to deliver 1,000,000x path tracing improvements with future GPUs.
  • It says they’ve already seen a jump of over 10,000x since the Pascal architecture.
  • The company aims to leverage RTX and AI advancements to meet its targets.

Gaming technologies like ray tracing have come a long way since their advent, and Nvidia has been a core contributor to it. Lighting and shadows in games are now barely distinguishable from real life, but the company wants to go even further.

In a recent GDC note, Nvidia revealed its complete roadmap for the future of path tracing and says its future gaming GPUs will bring a 1,000,000x leap in its performance, with the help of AI and RTX advancements

Why it matters: Seeing the full capabilities of path tracing, especially with games like Cyberpunk 2077, is mind-blowing. Over the years, the tech has become super advanced, but it still has some shortcomings.

John Spitzer, Nvidia’s VP of Developer & Performance Technology, detailed the future of path tracing and highlighted how much farther it has come. RTX features were introduced with the Turing architecture through the RTX 20 series.

Since then, Nvidia claims that the path tracing capabilities have seen a leap of over 10,000x. This is thanks to a combination of tech and software advancements like Tensor cores, DLSS 4.5, and more.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Creator Applauds The Witcher 4, Calls For AI Adoption

Story Highlight
  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 director Daniel Vavra praised The Witcher 4’s NVIDIA Mega Geometry demo, calling it impressive.
  • The Warhorse founder believes AI would make games like these possible on a smaller budget and with a shorter development cycle.
  • People wouldn’t have to wait for titles like GTA 6 for a decade, and the utilization of AI is an inevitability.

From both a narrative and technical perspective, The Witcher 4 is one of the most anticipated titles releasing in the near future. CD Projekt Red is utilising NVIDIA RTX Mega Geometry to reduce the game’s VRAM usage, and the developer’s new Unreal Engine 5 tech is poised to benefit the entire industry.

Furthermore, The Witcher 4 has some of the best talent in the gaming world working on it to make a more lively and responsive environment than before. Even the creator of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Daniel Vavra, has been impressed by the game, but he thinks it could have been even better if AI was utilised.

Why it matters: The beauty of games like The Witcher 4 is the hours of work that go into developing each aspect of the title by hand, something AI shouldn’t replace.

While posting on X, Warhorse founder Daniel Vavra applauded the recent Witcher 4 NVIDIA Mega Geometry tech demo, saying it impressed him. However, the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 director went on to say that with the help of AI, CDPR could make a much bigger and livelier game in less time.

Vavra called for AI adoption, saying that the tech could allow many more developers to make titles like The Witcher 4. In addition, studios like CD Projekt Red could make a world with more NPCs, better quests, and more realism without spending more money.

The Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 director emphasized that using AI would reduce the lengthy development period of current AAA games, giving us titles like The Witcher 4 and GTA 6 every few years.

The Witcher 4
Daniel Vavra believes titles like The Witcher 4 will take a shorter time to make with AI.

Daniel Vavra believes that this is an inevitability that will save developers from crunch and stress instead of taking their jobs.

The developer also hinted at currently using the tech for his next project, saying AI is making him realize ideas much bigger than Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 that were impossible before.
