Nvidia Has Big Plans For Path Tracing in The Future!

Story Highlight
  • Nvidia aims to deliver 1,000,000x path tracing improvements with future GPUs.
  • It says they’ve already seen a jump of over 10,000x since the Pascal architecture.
  • The company aims to leverage RTX and AI advancements to meet its targets.

Gaming technologies like ray tracing have come a long way since their advent, and Nvidia has been a core contributor to it. Lighting and shadows in games are now barely distinguishable from real life, but the company wants to go even further.

In a recent GDC note, Nvidia revealed its complete roadmap for the future of path tracing and says its future gaming GPUs will bring a 1,000,000x leap in its performance, with the help of AI and RTX advancements

Why it matters: Seeing the full capabilities of path tracing, especially with games like Cyberpunk 2077, is mind-blowing. Over the years, the tech has become super advanced, but it still has some shortcomings.

John Spitzer, Nvidia’s VP of Developer & Performance Technology, detailed the future of path tracing and highlighted how much farther it has come. RTX features were introduced with the Turing architecture through the RTX 20 series.

Since then, Nvidia claims that the path tracing capabilities have seen a leap of over 10,000x. This is thanks to a combination of tech and software advancements like Tensor cores, DLSS 4.5, and more.

Spitzer says with their next-gen GPUs, they want a leap of 1,000,000x from the Pascal architecture. It could make its way over with the RTX 60 series, and AI and RTX advancements are a big factor.

Anyhow, Nvidia is set to upgrade path tracing with even more new tech. For now, there aren’t too many games that support it, but with time, the number is expected to grow quite substantially with newer releases.
