  • When buying a gaming laptop, specifications like the CPU, GPU, storage, memory, and display configuration need to be researched thoroughly.
  • The perfect laptop can be a tool that helps students study and relax at the same time.

College is always an interesting time in a student’s life, and the lines between studies and playtime are often blurred as students settle into the college routine. This is also why choosing the right machine as a college partner is important since modern gaming laptops are more than capable of doing both.

Although choosing the perfect laptop may seem like a daunting task, the team at WriteaPaperForMe has surveyed various students to identify what exactly students want in their gaming laptops.

Why it matters: A gaming laptop, like any other repurchase, is an investment, and nobody wants to regret an expensive purchase. Therefore, understanding the strengths and weaknesses of these machines is extremely important.

Why Students Need A Gaming Laptop

Games On Gaming Laptop
Gaming On Laptops Can Be Quite Fun

Modern programs like Unity, Blender, and Adobe’s Creative Cloud are more resource-intensive than ever. This is why a dedicated GPU and a solid CPU are basically mandatory for students.

While ray-tracing, AI upscaling, and node-based simulations rely on GPU horsepower, tasks like coding can make use of high-core-count CPUs found in gaming laptops. Similarly, design students can make use of high-refresh-rate panels to observe subtle cursor movements and pen strokes.

Group presentations are also made more fun when a crisp 500-nit display presents information in a clear and vivid manner. Simply put, gaming laptops make everything better in an academic setting and usually outperform traditional ultrabooks.

Specifications To Consider

AMD Nvidia
Picking The Right AMD/Nvidia GPU Is Important

In terms of specifications, Nvidia’s RTX 4060 or AMD’s RX 7700S should be suitable for most students. On the CPU side, an Intel Core i7-14650H or Ryzen 7 8845HS should cover needs like modeling, compiling, and more, thanks to their 8 cores.

16GB of memory is also a must, but 32GB of memory should be considered for future-proofing. Finally, a 1TB NVMe SSD should cover students’ storage needs without sacrificing speed.

Those looking for the best displays should check for 100% sRGB coverage panels with a 144Hz refresh rate.

Budget Picks Under $1200

Lenovo LOQ 15
Budget Options Like The Lenovo LOQ 15 Suit Students Well

The Acer Nitro 17 is a solid budget option in this price category. Equipped with an RTX 4050 and a 13th Gen Intel CPU, this model delivers impressive performance without breaking the bank.

Elsewhere, Lenovo’s LOQ 15 brings additional savings by shipping with just 8GB of RAM. However, thanks to its Ryzen 7 7840HS CPU, the laptop can be upgraded to unleash its full potential.

Those prioritizing the display should consider the ASUS TUF A16 Advantage Edition. This laptop features a 165Hz IPS panel with a 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, making it a unique laptop for its price point.

Mid-Range Options

HP Omen 16
Capable Laptops Like The HP Omen 16 Can Cost Up To $2000

The $1200 to $1800 price range opens up a lot more options for students, with the likes of the MSI Cyborg 15 and HP Omen 16 serving as the most common recommendations.

Both laptops can be equipped with an RTX 4060 or RTX 4070 at 140W for smooth gameplay. They also boast 16:10 QHD displays that can handle any design work that requires a color-accurate display.

On the other hand, the Razer Blade 14 ships with a Ryzen 9 8945HS and an RTX 4070, adding yet another interesting option into the mix.

Premium Machines For Creatives

Macbook Pro M3
The M3 MacBook is Great For Professional Work

Students don’t typically have a lot of money to spare, but those interested in uncompromised performance should consider laptops like the Alienware x16 R2, which combines the power of the Intel Core i9-14900HX and RTX 4090.

Similarly, Apple’s MacBook Pro 16 with M3 chips is a great option for video editing. A laptop like the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 brings a Mini-LED display into the mix, which can reach 1100 nits of brightness at 240Hz.

However, as said earlier, these flagship machines require a hefty investment, which may only be worth it for students who already work in related fields or make money through freelancing.

Portability vs. Performance

The choice between portability and performance ultimately comes down to preferences and living situations.

Those intending to spend a long time walking on campus and taking bus rides should opt for more compact machines. 14-inch or 15-inch laptops are great here since they don’t weigh nearly as much as the more powerful options.

On the other hand, on-campus residents may find bulkier laptops more acceptable. Although they offer worse battery life, the performance benefits and superior thermal management may be worth the trade-off for some students.

Final Thoughts

Because so many factors impact the final decision, it is wise to carefully research potential options when buying a gaming laptop. Making a checklist based on workloads like 3D rendering, code compilation, and more can make the process easier and allow for more structured research.

Factors like the CPU/GPU combination, battery life, display color accuracy, and refresh rate should be studied carefully while consulting said checklist.

Visiting student forums to gather feedback for specific models from owners themselves may not be a bad idea either. All of this research should be worth it in the end since the right laptop can make studying and gaming all the more fun.

Why Game Developers Should Consider Online Courses To Break Into The Industry

Story Highlight
  • Online courses for game development develop fundamental skills like programming.
  • These courses teach popular technologies like Unreal Engine, Unity, and more.
  • Collaborating with peers and mentors in these courses can also help students develop a strong network within the industry.

Gaming is a hobby that millions of people enjoy across the globe. Publishers like Bethesda boast 15 million monthly players across various games, while others like EA hope to achieve 100 million players for the next Battlefield title.

These statistics highlight that the gaming audience has only grown in recent years, and this also means that interest in game development is at an all-time high. The modern age means that studying game design is easier than ever, thanks to an abundance of resources available online.

However, these resources must be carefully compared for the best results. Just as students use speedy paper reviews for their essay aid, they must carefully find the best game design course worth their time and money.

Why it matters: The games industry has laid off thousands of professionals this year. Therefore, any aspiring developers must ensure they have an impeccable grasp of the medium and its challenges.

Why Online Learning Is Perfect For Devs

Unreal Engine
Developers Need To Understand Engines Like Unreal For The Most Success

Because aspiring game developers are fans of the medium itself, the playful nature of online studies suits them incredibly well.

Thanks to the instant access to new engine tools and modules, students can practice with updated builds. Those on a tight schedule can also perform tasks like painting shaders during busy moments.

Elsewhere, Discord and Slack hubs make it easy for students to communicate. These hubs thrive with discussions related to design documents, lore writing, art, and more. Moreover, community chats help students gain exposure with feedback and bug reports.

Code reviews also allow students to improve their skills rapidly, while regular asset swaps encourage diversity in styles. When combined, all of these elements encourage structured learning that builds real-world skills rather than focusing on exams.

Because such courses are typically very flexible, students can practice consistent learning at their own pace.

Programming Foundation Courses

Embedded Programming
Mastering Programming Is Essential To Becoming A Great Developer

Writing code is a fundamental part of making games, so developing a solid grasp of this skill is essential.

Coursera offers a C# for Unity Specialization course by the University of Colorado’s faculty that goes over concepts like loops, arrays, and objects. Similarly, Udacity’s C++ Nanodegree for Game Developers discusses memory care and smart pointers in Unreal.

These courses also offer weekly quizzes for reinforced learning, mentor access for guidance, and extra workshops for added information. Making them more appealing, both courses support progress dashboards and connections with peer study groups.

Specialized Courses In Game Engines

Unreal Engine 5 Games on Xbox
More And More Games Are Using Unreal Engine 5

After the basics, aspiring game developers should consider courses tailored to specific game engines. Unreal Engine 5 is currently a favorite for developers industry-wide, but other engines also present great options.

Epic Games itself offers the UE5 From Blueprint to C++ course, covering visual graphs, custom nodes, and more. The course wraps up with a capstone project focused on a level showcasing Nanite meshes and Lumen light bounce.

LinkedIn Learning’s Unity 2025 Essential Training is also impressive since it discusses topics like the Universal Render Pipeline and batching to cut draw calls. This course allows students to craft a top-down dungeon crawler and optimize builds for mobile devices.

Both the aforementioned courses push GitHub submissions, helping students understand branch flow and merge etiquette.

Building A Portfolio And Networking

The next step involves publishing work on platforms for others to see. Platforms like Steam come in handy here, and developers can even publish early access builds for live feedback from players.

Sharing clips on Twitter and Reddit for feedback can also come in handy since the team behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took a similar approach when making the game. Finally, maintaining a strong LinkedIn profile with past work and projects is extremely important.

In short, aspiring game developers can kickstart their journey through online learning. With enough dedication and hard work, breaking into indie or AAA development is a real possibility, even in today’s hyper-competitive market.

Cronos: The New Dawn’s Protagonist Is A Woman Because That’s Simply “More Interesting,” Says Director

Story Highlight
  • The director of Cronos: The New Dawn, Jacek Zieba, says that the game’s protagonist is a woman because it’s more interesting.
  • He clarifies that there is no feminist agenda involved in making a female protagonist.
  • The game’s story revolves around her cold demeanor slowly thawing and changing as the game progresses.

Cronos: The New Dawn is shaping up to be one of the most appealing horror entries we’ve seen recently. While many fans of the horror genre are excited to eradicate some mutated orphans, some are also concerned due to the game’s choice of a female protagonist.

Now, the director of Cronos, Jacket Zieba, says that the title’s main character is a woman because that is simply ‘more interesting.’ He clarifies that a female protagonist in some strange suit in a sci-fi setting just sounds cooler than having another male one.

Why it matters: Cronos: The New Dawn may cause controversy in the wider gaming scene due to its female protagonist, but the developers assure that there are no political agendas that would detract from the game’s dark and deep narrative.

Cronos: The New Dawn
Cronos: The New Dawn is a third-person survival horror with time as your weapon.

In an interview with GamesRadar, the director also swears to God that no feminist agenda is involved in choosing a female protagonist for Cronos. The traveler is a woman with high tolerance to gore and fleshy monsters without political agendas that hinder gameplay.

No feminist agenda here. It’s not like we hate ourselves, or males. [It’s] more interesting to have a female protagonist in some strange suit in a sci-fi setting than to put another male one.

-Jacek Zieba, Director.

Bloober Team chose a female protagonist because it supports the main story ‘and all the many aspects of it.’ The game will support the feeling of the player being alienated and learning about humanity.

Cronos: The New Dawn
The game’s ambience has uncanny similarities to the Silent Hill 2 remake.

Cronos: The New Dawn launches in the third or fourth quarter of 2025 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and possibly Switch 2.

Do you think Cronos: The New Dawn will be able to avoid controversy and prove to be the next biggest Bloober Team project after the Silent Hill 2 remake? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.

Sony Pays Highest Salary Among Japanese Game Companies, Despite Nintendo’s Dominance

Story Highlight
  • A new report has ranked 20 companies by their employees’ average yearly pay in Japan.
  • According to the report, Sony pays its employees the most in Japan.
  • This is surprising as Nintendo is far more successful than Sony in the country.

It would be fair to say that Nintendo completely dominates when it comes to competition solely in Japan. Sony and Nintendo both have a strong presence in Japan, but the former can’t be compared to the latter in terms of popularity and success.

Overall, Sony is more successful than Nintendo, but when it comes to Japan, the story is entirely different. So, one would think that as Nintendo has established complete dominance in Japan, it would pay its employees the most, right? However, that isn’t the case as Sony pays its employees the most.

Why it matters: Despite Nintendo being way more powerful in the country, it is pretty surprising to see Sony treating its employees better.

Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo Has A Very Strong Presence In Japan

This information comes from SalesNow, which covers the period of June 2024 to June 2025. The data from SalesNow DB is considered pretty accurate (of course, it won’t be precisely the same) as it is one of the largest corporate information databases in Japan.

According to the press release by the company, the company that pays the most to its employees in Japan is none other than Sony. Bandai Namco and Nintendo come in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

Sony pays its employees an average yearly salary of $75k, which would be 11,132,231 in Yen. Bandai Namco is just $1k behind Sony, but Nintendo is a whopping $10k behind. As Sony is more successful than Nintendo worldwide, that would explain the massive gap in yearly pay

Nintendo Switch 2
Switch 2 Is The Fastest-Selling Console In Japan

However, that isn’t the most surprising bit from this report. What’s more surprising is that Square Enix is not in the top 20 list.

It should be noted that SalesNow pulls the data from official Japan’s government gazette, commercial and real estate registries, tax office disclosures, and, of course, from the data made public by government agencies and relevant companies.

So, this figure is not given by the official companies, which is why the actual salary may differ.

Xbox Dominates PlayStation’s Q2 2025 Best-Sellers, Claiming 60% Of The Top 10 Titles

Story Highlight
  • Xbox has 6/10 titles in PlayStation’s best-selling games of Q2 2025.
  • MLB: The Show 2025 is the only Sony-published title on the list.
  • Forza Horizon 5, a 4-year old release, has outsold every other game on the PS5 after recently getting ported.

Ever since going down the multiplatform route, Microsoft’s gaming division is finally looking optimistic, with the gaming giant finally raking in profits after years of losses.

However, this also meant that Xbox no longer aimed to compete with PlayStation, putting an end to console wars for good. Interestingly, new sales figures have revealed that 60% of PlayStation’s best-selling titles during Q2 2025 were published by Xbox, which raises the question as to which party won the console war?

Why it matters: Microsoft made the right call by taking the publisher route, but it also showcases how the console competition has changed within just a couple of years.

Pulling together our huge Q2 Games Market Dynamics report, which includes this chart (among, like, frankly too many others) and just kinda stared at this one for a bit.Wild times in the console market these days. Imagine showing this list to someone in 2015.

Mat Piscatella (@matpiscatella.bsky.social) 2025-07-29T21:31:50.243Z

Matt Piscatella, veteran industry analyst, shared the top 10 best-selling games for PlayStation during the Q2 period of 2025. Six out of ten titles were published by Xbox, with the lead taken by none other than Forza Horizon 5.

MLB: The Show 2025 is the only Sony-published title on this list, prompting a key question: Why are there no first-party releases this year? So far, the gaming giant has focused solely on publishing deals, with just one first-party game, Ghost of Yotei, scheduled for later this year.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
Xbox Published Titles Had The Most Pre-Orders On PlayStation For The Last Quarter

Interestingly, Forza Horizon 5 has been the best-selling title on the rival platform, even outselling the likes of Death Stranding 2, a PS5-exclusive published release. A 4-year-old game making waves like this really showcases Xbox’s power.

That is, Xbox has only succeeded at the software front. Hardware sales have been subpar and stagnant. Still, it’s fortunate that they were able to find their footing with the publisher route, which is a win-win case for every party involved, including the gamers themselves.

What are your thoughts on this story? Do you think Xbox has the potential to become a large entertainment publisher? Let us know in the comments below, or at the official Tech4Gamers Forums.

The Last of Us Dev Believes Pursuit of Realism Is Ruining Gaming

Story Highlight
  • A former Naughty Dog developer agrees that realism is harming gaming.
  • He states that simple animations require multiple iterations when developers aim to make everything as realistic as possible.
  • The developer also believes that tools like Unreal Engine will help alleviate some of these problems moving forward.

Gaming visuals have reached a point of diminishing returns over the last few years, with AAA games requiring an increasing amount of time to make. At the same time, these titles cost more and produce visuals that are only marginally better than games from six to seven years ago.

Discussing the subject, social media users recently claimed that the pursuit of ‘ultra realism’ in gaming visuals has ruined the medium. A former Naughty Dog developer also joined the discussion and agreed with the statement.

Why it matters: The industry’s budget problem has led to rising game prices, more monetization schemes, and more. Many believe the costs associated with modern AAA productions are the root of the problem.

Ultra realism in gaming
Former Naughty Dog Dev Discusses Ultra Realism In Gaming | Image via Twitter

Gamers recently shared their controversial opinions on Twitter, and user Davidvinc noted that ‘ultra realism’ and ‘AAA budgets’ ruined gaming.

He pointed to the risks associated with innovating in games today due to longer development times and higher budgets that come as a result of the pursuit of ultra-realistic visuals.

Former Naughty Dog developer Del Walker then joined the discussion and agreed with the tweet. He stated that aiming for ultra realism requires a ton of work, potentially increasing development time nearly tenfold for something as simple as a walk, run, and jump animation.

He’s right (on ultra realism ruining gaming). Ultra realism slows everything down.

-Del Walker

The developer later noted that the future will likely favor smaller teams with higher efficiency. He also praised Unreal Engine, stating that it should serve as an important tool for cost-cutting in the future.

PlayStation Remasters
The Average PlayStation Game Costs Between $200 and $300 Million

A similar approach has been observed in games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which were made by much smaller teams on a tight budget.

Such games also have more room to take risks and experiment with new ideas. As noted by the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director himself, such a game would have been very challenging to make at a major studio like Ubisoft.

What do you think about the former Naughty Dog developer’s thoughts? Do you agree? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.

EA CEO Confirms Battlefield 6 Will Be Priced At $70, Amid €80 Price Report

Story Highlight
  • There have been rumors going on that Battlefield 6 will cost €80.
  • However, just recently, the CEO of EA confirmed during the Q1 earnings call that the company doesn’t intend to change the current pricing system.
  • This proves that the upcoming Battlefield will be priced at $70.

Nintendo started the $80 price trend, which received an immense level of backlash. Shortly after, Microsoft followed suit, but as the backlash was too much for the gaming giant to revert to the $70 price tag.

EA also previously confirmed that it has no intention of increasing the prices of its games, as $70 right now is more than enough. However, recent leaks suggested that Battlefield 6 would cost €80, which is over $92. This started a commotion, but the CEO of Electronic Arts has just confirmed that the company has no intention of pricing the game at such a price

Why it matters: The $80 norm for video games shouldn’t be set as of now because many analysts suspect that GTA 6 could set a bar that others are very likely to follow. So, if the bar of $80 for a game sets now, it will become really complicated when the biggest video game of all time releases next year.

Battlefield 6 Key Art
Battlefield 6’s Latest Trailer Increased Its Hype By A Lot

The CEO of EA, Andrew Wilson, recently revealed during the company’s Q1 earnings call that currently, there are no plans to adjust the pricing of video games. So, the price of any of its upcoming games would not exceed $70

There have been rumors going on for a while that, according to a leak, the upcoming Battlefield will cost €80. If this were true, then the base game’s price would have exceeded $90. Rumors regarding the price tag of $80 were also becoming quite common, and many fans were already deciding not to buy it if that were the case.

However, this statement by the CEO has managed to squash any rumors suggesting the game’s price will exceed $70. While fans still can’t really trust EA that much, the company’s upcoming game looks promising

EA has promise a lot of destruction for Battlefield 6, and its latest trailer managed to showcase it quite a bit. Even though it was mostly CGI, on 31st July, gameplay footage will be revealed, which will show quite a bit of what fans can expect from the game.

What do you think about the upcoming Battlefield price being $70? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below or join the official Tech4Gamers forums for discussion.

MSI Makes History: Estimated To Ship Over 10 Million Motherboards In 2025 After Shipping 5 Million GPUs

Story Highlight
  • MSI is about to set a new company record by shipping over 10 million motherboards in 2025.
  • The growth is credited to improved product cooling, competitive pricing, and offering more budget-friendly motherboards.
  • MSI has also shipped over 5 million graphics cards this year, reportedly making up 50% of all NVIDIA GPU sales.

With the AI hype coming into play, combined with the typical consumer upgrade cycle, other companies such as ASRock, ASUS, and GIGABYTE are also pushing new products in the market, which makes it even more impressive to grow above the rest.

One of the reasons for these huge shipments is that their motherboards have stood out in the industry for both Intel and AMD, due to impressive improvements in VRM and SSD cooling, as well as offering reasonable prices than other brands.

Perhaps most importantly, the company has begun to expand into more affordable products, such as AMD motherboards based on the B850 chipset.

MSI MEG X870E GODLIKE - Motherboard with RAM Installed 2
AM5 Motherboard with RAM Installed.

In 2021, MSI hit the milestone when it shipped around 9.5 million motherboards, when everyone was in their homes during the pandemic. Now, MSI has broken the record of 9.5 million.

Almost half of 2025 is left, and MSI has managed to break its previous record. This allows MSI to quickly approach the market leaders, which are ASUS and GIGABYTE.

According to DigiTimesGIGABYTE is about to be surpassed by MSI, as it is estimated to ship around 10.3 million units by the end of 2025. Additionally, MSI has already shipped over 5 million GPUs.

It’s estimated that MSI alone accounts for 50% of NVIDIA-based GPU sales. The remaining 50% is shared by other manufacturers such as ASUS, GIGABYTE, Zotac, and many others.

Shipments of laptops for MSI are expected to increase dramatically by 2025, reaching 2.55 million units. This is despite a market dip caused by current US tariff issues.
