A Sequel, Remakes, And More!

Story Highlights
  • A new leak suggests multiple God of War games could be in the works.
  • This includes different titles from Santa Monica Studio and other developers.
  • No official confirmation has come from Sony or Santa Monica Studio yet.

A new report has surfaced, stating that multiple God of War games are in development. This information comes from the same source that recently leaked the PC port of Ghost of Tsushima, making it highly likely to be accurate.

Why it matters: PlayStation only released two mainline God of War games last generation. After its recent success, the IP could be headed toward further growth, with multiple titles from various studios.

God of War Ragnarok

The leaker states that Santa Monica Studio is not the only team involved in these projects. However, he did not point to any specific external teams.

Going by various leaks, we can narrow these games down to a few possibilities. For starters, job listings have hinted at a big sequel from Santa Monica Studio. This should be the next step for Kratos after God of War Ragnarok.

However, past rumblings from insiders have also hinted at a potential standalone title for Atreus. With PlayStation taking a similar approach to Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the possibility of a smaller-scale game based on Atreus is high.

The latest leaks also suggest a remake of the God of War trilogy is in development. While it is unclear whether these projects are remakes or remasters, PlayStation seems interested in revising the classics.

This re-release is likely to be outsourced to a different team. In total, the following games are expected:

  • God of War Trilogy Remake/Remaster
  • Standalone title based on Atreus
  • Next mainline God of War entry

God of War 3 Is Still Considered A Fan-Favorite

A PC port for the latest entry could also be in the works at Nixxes Software. Following the 2022 release, Santa Monica Studio has been working on new projects for over a year.

Apart from new adventures for Kratos, the team is reportedly working on a new IP led by director Cory Barlog. Therefore, there is much to anticipate from this first-party PlayStation developer.

According to fans, this IP is Sony’s biggest franchise.

The series was losing popularity before the 2018 soft reboot, and Ascension was considered a commercial disappointment. With the opposite being the case today, PlayStation seemingly intends to go all in for the future.
