$100 Million More Than Last of Us 2!

Story Highlights
  • Over 1TB of data from Insomniac Games has been leaked online.
  • The development cost of the recently released Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was $315 million.
  • This budget might include the cost of the upcoming Venom spin-off leaked from this ransomware attack.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been one of the biggest releases of the year, selling over 2.5 million copies in the first 24 hours after its release. It also sold over 5 million copies within two weeks of its release.

As the best-selling title of October, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 captured the excitement of the entire industry. Recent leaks from Insomniac have confirmed that the studio spent over $315 million on this project, and it appears to have been worth it.

Why it matters: This budget highlights that PlayStation had a lot of faith in the game. It also requires sales of at least 10 million units for considerable profits after this type of production cost.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Over 1TB of data from Insomniac Games has been leaked online, including the roadmap of their games, details about Wolverine, and an X-Men project. One of the documents has revealed the budgets of the developer’s latest release.

This title was allocated $315 million, which is a much higher budget compared to the roughly $200 million Naughty Dog had for The Last of Us Part 2 or Santa Monica for God of War Ragnarok.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 wasn’t very huge either and could be finished within 17 hours. It borrowed various assets from past games and did not have the most impressive production values, making this budget quite surprising.

However, this cost may include the budget of Venom. According to the leaks, this is Insomniac Games’ next release, scheduled for 2025. The Venom-based spin-off will be similar in scope to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, offering a shorter experience.

Therefore, the $315 million might not have been used up for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 alone.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Venom

The leaked files further reveal that the development cost of Marvel’s Wolverine is also over $300 million, and Insomniac Games expects sales of around 10 million units.

Other interesting tidbits include the $156 million budget for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

The developer seems to be expecting 10.5 million lifetime sales for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This figure seems like a safe bet since the game had already reached 5 million units sold by November.

Future promotions and bundles during Christmas should lead to a major sales boost, propelling the game to further success.
