- 2K seems to have no plans for a Mafia 4 announcement.
- Instead, Borderlands 4 is likely to show up at Summer Game Fest tomorrow.
- Mafia 4 could still show up before the end of 2024.
Mafia 4 has been in the news cycle for quite some time now, with rumors hinting at an incoming reveal. While most people were anticipating a Summer Game Fest announcement, it seems the game won’t be showing up at this event.
Why it matters: 2K Entertainment is appearing at Geoff Keighley’s renowned summer showcase. Previously believed to be coming with a Mafia announcement, it seems 2K has something else up its sleeve.
According to the leaker Kurakasis, information on 2K’s Summer Game Fest announcement suggests that the big reveal isn’t for the Mafia IP. It is heavily rumored that the announced title will be Borderlands 4.
2K confirmed that they plan to reveal the next iteration of one of their biggest franchises at the event. It seems like Borderlands will be the one they come up with. Unfortunately for Mafia fans, the wait seems to continue.
This IP hasn’t seen many new releases recently, though 2K did launch Mafia Definitive Edition in 2020. The last mainline entry was 2016’s Mafia 3, which launched eight years ago.
Mafia 4 has reportedly been in development since 2022. While we know development for modern games is a long process, releasing Mafia 4 after GTA 6 could overshadow it, as fans would be too invested in the latter.
Hangar 13 and 2K did a brilliant job on Mafia: Definitive Edition. If they can keep the basics the same for Mafia 4, it’ll be nothing short of a great experience. According to leaks, the game is said to be a prequel to the first entry.
Fans can still anticipate a Mafia 4 announcement sometime this year. While Summer Game Fest may not be bringing one, fans should keep an eye out for upcoming events like the potential PlayStation Showcase or Gamescom for the reveal.
