Another Live Service Game In An Already Bloated Genre!

Story Highlight
  • New job listings reveal that Avalanche Studios is working on a new live service game.
  • The Just Cause studio is once again doing a multiplayer game despite the last one getting canceled.
  • Contraband was announced in 2021 and was canceled during development in 2025.

As much as live service games can generate humongous profits if they are a hit, they can be an equally big disaster if the audience doesn’t like them. Especially now, when the development costs are super high, and companies can’t really risk it.

Just Cause studio, Avalanche, announced its live service title, Contraband, in 2021, and it was eventually canceled in 2025. However, the studio is now once again developing a live service game despite the last one getting shelved

Why it matters: Most would want the studio to focus on live service games and maybe even work on a new Just Cause title. Live service is a hit or miss, as the genre is now super saturated with a lot of competition.

Based on job postings on LinkedIn, Avalanche Studios is hiring to help transition its new title from its prototype to the pre-production stage. The game will feature ‘multiplayer environments’, with a long-term roadmap.

Notably, this is also a big exit as the studio previously used its in-house Apex Engine for its games, but this new title is shifting to Unreal Engine. We’ve seen many studios do this, despite all the flaws with the engine.

Contraband Xbox And Avalanche Studios
Its previous multiplayer game, Contraband, was cancelled 4 years after its announcement

However, the elephant in the room is the developer’s insistence on developing a multiplayer game. It worked for 4 years on Contraband, which was eventually canceled, and also led to them shuttering their UK studio.
