He Also Criticized The Studio's Unsustainable Development Cycles!

Story Highlight
  • A former TLOU designer thinks Intergalactic might need changes to avoid the TLOU 2 situation.
  • He said the game was way too ambitious for its own good, and this shouldn’t be repeated.
  • The title’s story also garnered a lot of attention and criticism and was labelled as woke.

Naughty Dog is one of the most successful PlayStation studios in recent generations. While known for huge hits like the Uncharted and The Last of Us series, the studio has become a little controversial for a couple of reasons over the years.

A major reason is the studio’s last new title, The Last of Us Part 2. It was heavily criticized for being woke, making it a central plot point, and for overstuffed gameplay, and a former developer believes they have to change that for Intergalactic.

Why it matters: The trailer for their upcoming title quickly garnered a lot of attention, and for all the wrong reasons. Fans criticized the casting and accused the studio of forced DEI, and there’s also been no gameplay at all.

Former dev says Intergalactic might need changes to avoid TLOU 2 situation

Former TLOU Series Designer at Naughty Dog, Benson Russell, says that Naughty Dog may need to edit out Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet a bit to avoid a similar situation they had with The Last of Us Part 2 at launch.

They try to make the story concise, but with too much focus on unused mechanics and side quests, which doesn’t make the title fun. Additionally, people are calling it woke too, but that might be a little too late for anything.

The title had multiple criticisms for plot and gameplay choices

Intergalactic is also the first time the studio is going for sort of a hack-and-slash gameplay, so they need to be careful. He also criticized the long development time and said that this isn’t sustainable for a central PlayStation studio
