The Gaming Giant Is Seemingly Doubling Down On The Physical Medium.

Story Highlight
  • A new Xbox job listing reveals that the company is looking for a strategist to manage physical game releases.
  • The employee will oversee and coordinate the launch of physical Xbox games across all platforms.
  • The strategist must also ensure consumer satisfaction with the releases.

Months on from the initial announcement, the gaming world is still reeling from the fallout of Sony’s digital-only policy. Gaming giants across the globe have weighed in on the company’s decision to end physical disc production, with the likes of Nintendo insisting that their consumers will be able to play games physically.

The gaming community has unsurprisingly protested against this neglect of physical media, even boycotting PlayStation consoles to send the company a message. Sony’s main competitor in the ecosystem, on the other hand, is seemingly taking advantage of the situation and sticking with the players in this debate.

Why it matters: To give PlayStation a serious challenge in the forthcoming generation, Xbox needs every advantage it can attain. Hence, improving its physical disc distribution is the most no-brainer move in trying to gain an edge over Sony.

A new Xbox job listing has hinted that the gaming giant will continue to support physical releases in the future, as it’s looking for a specialist to handle manufacturing and distribution across all platforms.

According to the job listing, the Xbox Games Supply Strategist will coordinate the release of physical games worldwide, overseeing the execution of global supply positioning strategies across the product’s lifecycle. Moreover, the strategist will also observe the sales and channel execution of physical titles, while ensuring that the inventory is poised to serve consumers in an efficient manner.

So far, Xbox hasn’t explicitly stated whether it would follow Sony’s lead and abandon physical media, but this job listing suggests that the gaming giant is not only willing to double down on its physical disc infrastructure, but also improve it.

Xbox Physical Game
Xbox is reportedly going to add a disc drive to its next-gen hardware.

CEO Asha Sharma has already hinted that the company wants to give players a choice when it comes to Xbox Helix, teasing that the console will have a disc drive. With Team Green also surveying players on whether they would like disc drives on next-gen hardware, all signs seemingly point to the company supporting the medium to get one over Sony.
