Also Deserved Nominations At Game Awards!

Story Highlights
  • According to the official Twitter account, Hogwarts Legacy is the number one-selling new release of 2023.
  • The game has likely sold around 20 million copies or more, although this remains to be confirmed.
  • These results make it more successful than first-party releases from PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox this year.

Avalanche Software has finally fulfilled its promise of releasing Hogwarts Legacy on all current and last-gen platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.

While this version makes key adjustments to the open world and presentation, the Nintendo Switch delivers respectable results. Following this release, the developer has confidently announced a massive milestone.

Hogwarts Legacy is officially 2023’s best-selling game.

Why it matters: Games like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have sold nearly 20 million copies this year, making this an incredible achievement for a new IP.

While the studio has not confirmed an exact figure, it has likely sold around 20 million copies or more since Nintendo announced 18.5 million sales for Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in August, which went up to 19.5 million in September.

By May, Hogwarts Legacy had sold 15 million units, with 17.2 million hours spent in the game by last-gen players alone. Interestingly, this game is also one of the few new IPs in the industry this year.

Although it benefits a lot from the popularity of Harry Potter, Avalanche Software created the first game based on this property in many years, making this achievement even more impressive.

This result means that Hogwarts Legacy has also outsold games like Starfield, Spider-Man 2, and more. Despite the results, the game was unable to make it to the nominations at The Game Awards.

Hogwarts Legacy allows Harry Potter fans to fulfill their long-awaited dreams of immersing themselves in the Harry Potter universe.

As a big-budget AAA title, it succeeds in putting players at the forefront, letting them craft their own adventures in the wizarding world of Hogwarts. This is the biggest reason for its unmatched success this year.

Following such results, a sequel is more or less inevitable. While Warner Bros plans to continue its pivot to live service games in the future, these results should ensure that Hogwarts Legacy remains in the safe hands of Avalanche Software as a single-player IP.
