Halo Campaign Evolved Launches To Lowest Series Player Count on Steam

The First Halo Remake Isn't A Huge Success So Far!

Story Highlight
  • Halo Campaign Evolved has posted the lowest Steam launch player count for the series.
  • Steam places its early concurrent peak below other Halo releases on the platform, which accumulated over 100,000 players at least.
  • The weak start shows that perhaps Halo is no longer the juggernaut it once was.

Following a slow start in early access, Halo Campaign Evolved is now out globally. Despite strong reviews and a solid position on the Steam best-sellers charts, the title appears to be doing far from great on Steam so far.

Xbox’s latest remake has launched with what appears to be the weakest player-count debut for any Halo release on Valve’s platform.

Why it matters: Halo is still one of Xbox’s most important first-party IPs, but the franchise has spent years trying to regain consistent momentum.

Halo Campaign Evolved Is Off To A Disappointing Start

According to SteamDB, Halo Campaign Evolved reached a lower early concurrent player peak than previous Halo entries released on Steam. The game topped out at just 25,376 players on Steam, marking a mere 25% uplift over its peak player count in early access.

Needless to say, this is a highly disappointing player count, especially when compared to its own predecessors. Halo Infinite and The Master Chief Collection both had a visibly bigger launch on the platform, even if long-term retention became a separate issue.

The latter peaked at over 272,000 players on Steam, but this came with the caveat of a free-to-play launch. On the other hand, the Master Chief Collection still managed to peak at over 161,000 players.

Some have said that Halo’s performance is a result of its Game Pass inclusion. However, a title like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which also launched on the service, still saw much better player counts on Steam.

This remake will likely lead to Microsoft questioning the long-term future of Halo. Perhaps the gaming giant will make necessary changes for the rumored Halo 2 Remake to ensure it doesn’t end up meeting a similar fate.

What are your thoughts on the game’s disappointing stats on Steam? Let’s discuss in the comments below.
