GTA 6 is expected to overshadow everything later this year, and the game will certainly take home plenty of awards. However, it won’t be able to match the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, at least as far as a Game of the Year clean sweep is concerned.

Why it matters: GTA 6 should end up breaking several industry records, but it may not be able to take home every award.

GTA 6 is the biggest upcoming game on the calendar, but even Rockstar’s next blockbuster has limits in awards season. The game can no longer completely sweep this year’s Game of the Year awards.

For context, doing so requires winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards, the DICE Awards, GDC Awards, BAFTAs, and Golden Joysticks. Whether GTA 6 will win Game of the Year at these award shows remains to be seen, but Rockstar Games’ upcoming title is already out of the Golden Joysticks race.

This is because of GTA 6’s November release, which will make it eligible for the 2027 Golden Joysticks and not the 2026 event. The game can still win Game of the Year at every other award show.

However, because titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Expedition 33 won Game of the Year across all five, GTA 6 will fall behind these titles in one area.

Anyhow, Rockstar Games is gearing up for another information drop regarding GTA 6 through the upcoming Game Informer coverage. As such, fans should have plenty to look forward to ahead of these award shows.
