$1000 GPU Fails To Outperform Last-Gen Flagship!

Story Highlight
  • The RTX 5080 shows a 22% improvement over the RTX 4080 in Vulkan but only a 6.7% boost in OpenCL.
  • The RTX 5080 is expected to deliver about 90% of the performance of the RTX 4090.
  • Potential buyers should wait for official reviews before making any decisions.

A series of recently leaked benchmarks have made public the performance results of Nvidia’s future GeForce RTX 5080 GPU.

The GeForce RTX 5080 was observed on the Geekbench browser during OpenCL and Vulkan benchmark testing, and based on its performance, it might not be as fast as some had hoped for.

Why it matters: The GeForce RTX 5080 performance results could impact gamers and professionals deciding between upgrading to the latest GPU or sticking with their current setup, especially since custom variants of the card are expected to cost an arm and a leg.

Benchleaks was the first to notice the benchmark data, which appears to have been accidentally released by a reviewer. As per the data, the RTX 5080 under test was an MSI-branded variant bearing the MS-7E62 model number.

In Geekbench, the RTX 5080 received a score of 256,138 in the OpenCL test and 261,836 in the Vulkan benchmark. In Vulkan, the RTX 5080 performs about 22% faster than its predecessor, the RTX 4080, on average. However, OpenCL scores are more limited, only increasing by 6.7%.

The leaked benchmarks indicate that the RTX 5080 may not outperform the RTX 4090. Furthermore, according to 2kliksphilip, the GeForce RTX 5080 might offer 90% performance of the GeForce RTX 4090.

His data was based on comparing CUDA Cores and the frequency bump of GeForce RTX 5080 compared to its predecessor.

The data suggests that the trend of 80-class GPUs outperforming 90-class GPUs from the previous generation might shift, potentially due to Nvidia cutting down these graphics cards and holding them back from their full potential.

Nvidia may also release more powerful RTX 50-series cards later down the line through a Super refresh. As such, the gaming giant may have left room to fit in a few more models between the RTX 5080 and 5090.
