The Game Was Delayed To Avoid The GTA 6 Launch!

Story Highlight
  • Star Citizen’s single-player offshoot Squadron 42 has now been delayed to Q2 2027.
  • The game was meant to launch this year following multiple delays after starting development in 2014.
  • Cloud Imperium Games decided to delay it over GTA 6 launch concerns, following other developers.

Star Citizen and Squadron 42 have amassed a following of gamers who have continued to crowdfund these projects for over a decade. They hit over $1 billion USD in crowdfunding earlier this year, even without a release date in sight for the ambitious Star Citizen.

Many gamers were also looking forward to playing its single-player campaign, Squadron 42, which was meant to launch this year. However, a new update from CIG reveals that it has been delayed yet again, this time to Q2 2027.

Why it matters: Star Citizen and Squadron 42 have seen multiple delays over the decade of development, which has made fans upset with CIG. Many argue Squadron 42 shouldn’t have been delayed due to GTA 6 since it’s already been paid for by crowdfunders.

Cloud Imperium Games CEO Chris Roberts announced the Squadron 42 delay in a new blog post, clarifying that the decision was made due to the looming launch of GTA 6.

For those not in the know, the single-player offshoot has been in development since 2014 and draws from the same crowdfunded pool.

Chris argues that all outlets and content creators would focus on GTA 6, even if it is not launching on PC this November. CIG delayed Squadron 42 so that all the media attention can be on the sci-fi project when it drops.

Regardless, CIG aims to hold previews of Squadron 42 with content creators and some early backers in October and will announce a concrete release date shortly after.

While Squadron 42 has been declared to be fully playable for a long time, many fans think that’s far from the truth. They argue CIG just needed an excuse to delay Squadron 42 since it might still need polishing.

Star Citizen also appears to be in murky waters, as per a recent showing. Even the basic features, such as gun reloading, looked broken in a new livestream; the developers were also passive-aggressive and argumentative with each other. So, it might still be a long time away.
