- A former PlayStation executive says PC ports didn’t hurt PS5 sales in a meaningful way.
- He argues that they were beneficial to PlayStation and helped fund future titles.
- Despite his support for the PC platform, the former executive does not think day-one PC releases would be wise for the company.
PlayStation’s recent PC strategy has been a cause for many debates, largely due to the ongoing rumors about the gaming giant stepping away from the platform. It is said that Sony is now more interested in a console-first approach for the PS5.
This, unfortunately, means that big titles like Saros and Ghost of Yotei might not ever show up on PC, but a former PlayStation executive believes this won’t necessarily make a huge difference as far as PS5 sales are concerned.
Why it matters: Sony’s primary motivation behind doing away with PC ports appears to be focusing on wider PS5 adoption, something that many believed was jeopardized after the gaming giant began porting its titles to PC.
Speaking to Back Pocket, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida commented on PlayStation’s PC strategy.
He noted that because investment in new projects has grown so humongously lately, it makes financial sense for big games to be released on PC. The former executive also admitted that a vocal minority of fans does not appreciate this move from Sony.
According to Shuhei Yoshida, this move is unlikely to have hurt PS5 adoption and sales in any meaningful capacity. Instead, he argues that PC ports help fund future titles from the company.
I do not think that really affected the adoption of PlayStation hardware like the PS5 in any way. Games on PC must have helped recoup investment of these big budget games.
-Shuhei Yoshida

With that said, the former executive also admitted that it would not be wise for PlayStation to launch its first-party titles on PC on day one.
