  • Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida recently suggested a younger team could lead Final Fantasy 17.
  • A new conversation suggests the Final Fantasy 7 Remake director may lead the next mainline entry.

Following a shift in strategy, Square Enix appears to be laying the earliest groundwork for Final Fantasy 17, with senior developers increasingly willing to discuss what the next numbered game could look like.

The Japanese giant has yet to announced Final Fantasy 17, but a recent comment from veteran Square Enix director has certainly raised a few eyebrows.

Why it matters: Final Fantasy 16 is now over three years old, so millions of fans have begun anticipating the future of the series.

Final Fantasy 16 wasn’t the biggest success according to Square Enix

Naoki Yoshida, better known to players as Yoshi-P, has recently addressed the possibility of Final Fantasy 17. Rather than discussing his involvement in the project, the Final Fantasy 16 producer suggested it may be time for a younger generation of developers to take control of the mainline series.

As reported by Audrey on Twitter/X, Naoki Yoshida teased Naoki Hamaguchi’s involvement in Final Fantasy 17’s development. Naoki Hamaguchi, of course, is the director behind Square Enix’s modern Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.

Yoshi P noted that many fans have asked for Naoki Hamaguchi to work on Final Fantasy 17. However, just before Hamaguchi could say anything, Yoshi P was quick to stop him, suggesting that there is something happening behind the scenes.

If I answer…
No, No, don’t!

FF7 Revelations Launches Next Year

For the time being, director Naoki Hamaguchi has his hands full with Final Fantasy 7 Revelations. As for Final Fantasy 17, the game faces the choice of whether to go for a turn-based combat system or action-oriented gameplay.

Final Fantasy 16 chose the latter, but it remains to be seen whether the next mainline entry will continue the tradition. It should also launch across all platforms at once following Square Enix’s renewed focus on multiplatform gaming.

Should Final Fantasy 17 remain action-focused, or is it time for the series to return to turn-based combat? Do you think the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy director should direct the game? Let’s discuss below.
