- Fable has reportedly gone over Microsoft’s initially set budget.
- This likely means that Xbox has even higher expectations for the RPG than it did a few years ago.
- Another first-party title, Marvel’s Blade, seems to be going through the same situation.
Xbox has various blockbusters in the works at the moment, among which Fable is one of the most important. Recently delayed to February 2027, the upcoming RPG from Playground Games has shown a lot of potential so far.
However, a new report suggests not everything is going according to Playground Games’ plan. It is said that Fable has now gone over its initial budget.
Why it matters: Xbox has been ruthless with its cost-cutting efforts recently. This could put Playground Games under the threat of layoffs and potential job cuts if Fable doesn’t perform spectacularly well.

In a new report, Windows Central’s Jez Corden shared that Fable’s development has gone uncomfortably over its original budget.
This isn’t the biggest surprise, considering the game has been in development for many years at this point. If anything, the latest delay has likely added to the ballooning budget for Xbox’s massive RPG.
Interestingly, another Xbox first-party title, Marvel’s Blade, is said to have gone through a similar scenario. It seems games going over budget is quickly becoming a common theme for Xbox’s first-party projects.
With the budget going up, the gaming giant has likely raised its expectations for this release. While Playground Games’ reputation should protect it from harsh outcomes, Fable underperforming could still lead to potential cost-cutting measures within the studio.

Given the typical AAA budget, Microsoft has likely spent at least $200-300 million on the project by now. It remains to be seen, however, if the game will make enough of a profit to warrant further investment in the series.
Xbox has recently announced a renewed focus on big IPs, so Fable certainly has the potential to receive multiple new games in the coming years.
