Epic Teases Dedicated App For Xbox Consoles!

Story Highlight
  • The Epic Games VP has teased the storefront’s arrival on Xbox.
  • He says that the company would be glad to make an Epic Games Store application for Xbox consoles.
  • The VP also discussed a potential Epic Games Store experience for the ROG Xbox Ally.

The Epic Games Store may not have become as big a rival to Steam as it hoped to be, but it has certainly established a name for itself over the years, thanks in large part to the company’s strategy of offering free games.

As the company continues to explore options to grow this ecosystem further, Microsoft’s next-gen console, seemingly on track to launch next year, presents a major opportunity. In fact, the team has even teased its potential storefront on the next-gen Xbox.

Why it matters: Microsoft is taking a new approach with the next-gen Xbox, combining the PC and console experience into one. This console-PC hybrid experience could be a gateway to a bigger audience for the Epic Games Store.

Xbox Is Trying Something Different Next Generation

Speaking to Windows Central, Epic Games Store VP Steve Allison acknowledged that talks between Microsoft and Epic Games are already underway on the subject.

He was keen to confirm that the team would be glad to make an application for the upcoming Xbox consoles if third-party storefronts were allowed on the next-generation hardware.

We’ve been talking to the folks at Microsoft. If they do follow through with allowing Steam and the Epic Games Store on Xbox hardware, we will be there.

The VP also confirmed that an optimized version of the app store is being considered for the Xbox ROG Ally, teasing that this could come to fruition at some point during the next year.

Steam vs Epic Games
Epic Games Store and Steam Could Compete On Xbox Very Soon

As VP Steve Allison pointed out, Epic Games Store’s arrival on Xbox would also mean competition with Steam on the console.

This competition has been a huge focus for Steve Allison and everyone else at the company, but it remains to be seen whether things will improve for the better when both storefronts debut on Xbox consoles.
