Baldur’s Gate 3 was anticipated by fans of the RPG genre for a while. Larian Studios has packed hundreds of hours of content in the game, and these offerings have been refined over three years of early access.
With the game finally leaving early access today, expectations were high for Larian Studios’ latest work. To nobody’s surprise, Baldur’s Gate 3 has been an extremely popular launch, but it has also shattered all expectations.
Less than three hours after launch, the game has reached over 251K concurrent players on Steam.
Why it matters: This puts the game ahead of major 2023 releases like Remnant 2 and Resident Evil 4 Remake, making it a massive success for Larian Studios.
At the time of writing, Baldur’s Gate 3 has nearly 252K concurrent players on Steam. Since the game has been on the market for just a few hours, these numbers are likely to continue increasing for the next few days.
In terms of reception, Baldur’s Gate 3 has overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam. Over 90% of the 70K reviews on the platform are positive. Moreover, users who have not bought the game yet are engaged with the gameplay, with over 463K viewers on Twitch.
The game is also comfortably sitting at the top of Steam’s best-sellers, beating free-to-play titles like CS: GO and recent releases like Remnant 2.
This is a massive release for Larian Studios, and the studio is likely pleased with the results. However, the game is also coming to PS5 next month, which will bring even more players to the RPG.
Following the Steam and PlayStation releases, Baldur’s Gate 3 is expected to arrive on Xbox Series S|X consoles. The developer is struggling to optimize the game for Xbox, so a release date has not been confirmed.
Swen Vincke from Larian Studios recently claimed it would take more effort to complete the Xbox Series S|X ports, so the game is not expected to arrive on the platform before 2024.
