Resident Evil 2 Remake Beats Resident Evil 7 To Become Franchise Best-Seller

12.6 Million RE2 Remake Copies Sold Since 2019!

Despite its age, the Resident Evil IP continues to shine as the recent release in the franchise, the remake of Resident Evil 4, has already sold over 5 million copies.

While recent releases continue to perform well, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard was Capcom’s best-selling game until recently. However, a recent update to Capcom’s Platinum titles has revealed Resident Evil 2 Remake is now the best-selling game in the franchise.

Why it matters: This could lead to an increased focus on remakes from Capcom. Remakes are easier to develop than original entries, and Capcom is likely to consider even more remakes for this reason.

Capcom has recently released its financial reports for the second quarter of the year and updated the Platinum Titles list. As seen above, the Resident Evil 2 Remake has taken the third spot on the list, overtaking Resident Evil 7 Biohazard.

The remake has reached a new milestone with 12.6 million sales in the last four years, which puts it slightly ahead of Resident Evil 7, which has sold 12.4 million copies. Both games were originally made for the PS4 and Xbox One.

However, Capcom also updated the titles for current-generation consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X. In addition to the exceptional critical reception, this likely pushed more people to try the games.

Aside from Resident Evil, the first two spots are occupied by two Monster Hunter games. Monster Hunter: World is Capcom’s current best-seller with 19 million sales, and Monster Hunter Rise comes in second place with 13.2 million copies sold.

Capcom has recently revealed that the survival-horror franchise has sold over 146 million copies worldwide. Following another successful entry, Resident Evil 9 is rumored for a 2025 release window.

On the other hand, Capcom is likely to continue with its strategy of Resident Evil remakes. A recent survey has already hinted at future remakes, and the gaming giant is also considering non-numbered entries like Resident Evil Code: Veronica for potential remakes.
