The Suite Of Strong RPG Releases Continues In February!

Story Highlight
  • Avowed’s review embargo has been lifted with a decent 80 score on Metacritic.
  • The fantastical RPG works great with a first-person perspective featuring a detailed open world and impactful choices that shape a well-written narrative.
  • However, many complain that the game feels unfinished and loses its charm midway.

Xbox’s first-party releases for 2025 are stacked, and they have started off strong with Avowed. With just less than a week from the game’s launch, the review embargo for Avowed has been lifted, and it seems that we got another great first-person RPG this month.

Why It Matters: With February releases stacked with heavy hitters, many were skeptical that Avowed would be a weak release. Against all odds, Avowed has managed to surpass everyone’s expectations and secure a spot as a solid title in Xbox’s catalog.

Avowed Received A Generally Favorable Score Of 80 On Metacritic
  • 9 – Inverse
  • 9 – GamesHub
  • 9 – TechRaptor
  • 7 – IGN
  • 7 – Game Rant
  • 6 – Gamespot
  • 6 – TheGamer
  • 4/5 -Dexerto
  • 4/5 – Eurogamer
  • 4/5 – GamesRadar

Aside from major gaming outlets rating the game these strong numbers, Avowed managed to get an 80/100 score on Metacritic. Being generally favorable, many praised the game’s strong narrative, world detail, and impactful choices.

Still, a few bad reviews still complain about the game being incomplete and lacking in the second part. The combat wasn’t quite intriguing for the reviewers, either.

However, despite the director’s remarks about the game being janky, one of the reviews stated that it was the most complete Obsidian game.

Despite being often compared to Skyrim, the game departs from the comparison just a few hours into the story, according to the reviews. Nevertheless, it stands out as a true successor to Skyrim but focuses more on the narrative department and Role-playing features.

With Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 already setting the bar high for RPGs this month, breaking several records, it seems that Avowed will hold up just fine.
