- Astro Bot has now surpassed 4.3 million copies and generated $250 million in revenue.
- The game appears to be highly profitable based on its mid-sized budget and scale.
- The 2024 GOTY award highlights that Sony needs to make more similar games.
Sony introduced Astro as an introduction to the PlayStation 5’s capabilities. While it didn’t seem like much at that time, it was later developed into a full-fledged game, Astro Bot, that even won the Game of the Year award in 2024.
Now, Astro is kind of the official mascot of this generation. There was a lot of skepticism around the game’s sales and profits, but a new report has revealed that Astro Bot has likely sold over 4.3 million copies on PS5.
Why it matters: This genre of gaming is usually captured by Nintendo, so Sony jumping into it and being successful proves that the company needs to focus more on such smaller-scaled games, as there is a lot of demand.

Alinea Analytics has revealed that Astro Bot has sold 4.3 million copies and generated revenue of a whopping $250 million. The budget is believed to be well under $100 million, so it has been massively profitable.
The game had a slow start, but received a major push when it won the GOTY award. It has also been actively in the top-sellers this year as well. The main demographic for the title is families and children.

So, this aligns with what we stated earlier, that Sony needs to push more games like this because a big chunk of this genre is held by Nintendo. PlayStation had Sackboy, but that seems to be dead at this point.
