Capcom has seen a resurgence in recent years. The company has been doing exceptionally well with franchises like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. Resident Evil, in particular, has seen a huge surge in popularity since Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

However, it seems like Capcom had other plans for Resident Evil 7. The game was seen as a return to form for the Resident Evil franchise, owing to the focus on the horror aspect. Though, Capcom did not initially want this direction for Resident Evil 7.

A new interview from Executive Producer Jun Takeuchi has revealed some interesting information on the title’s development. The developer revealed that Capcom wanted Resident Evil 7 to be a live service online multiplayer game with microtransactions

The developer elaborated on Capcom’s decision stating how the development team was asked to include microtransactions with online elements. However, the developers were not very fond of this idea. The Executive Producer said,

“So we were being told make this, make that. It was really hard on the directors at the time. Online multiplayer this, downloadable content that . Ongoing service games, microtransactions. Make a Resident Evil that ticks all those boxes.”

He further explained that he was tasked with fixing the game. Resident Evil 7 was in bad shape when Jun Takeuchi joined the development team. This was the moment that sealed the game’s fate.

Jun Takeuchi and Director Koshi Nakanishi decided to return to the horror genre’s roots. The live service elements were scrapped entirely, and a single-player game was made without any multiplayer aspects.

This is an exciting story; successful titles like Resident Evil 7 have also gone through various development hurdles, which one would not normally expect. Moreover, the developers single-handedly saved the title from being a possible disaster. Live service games are very popular today, but only a few developers have managed to nail this genre of games.

Resident Evil 7 Capcom

Since its launch, Resident Evil 7 has become a phenomenal title for Capcom. The 7th mainline entry has become the best-selling game in the Resident Evil franchise. The game has also received almost universal praise from fans and critics.

Perhaps this story has an important lesson for developers and publishers. When developers are allowed to be in control, they can come up with some incredible video games. Resident Evil 7 serves as a perfect example of such a scenario.
