The PlayStation 5 has been out for nearly 2 years, and the console already has a great library of exclusive titles. Among these titles, Returnal has been a breath of fresh air compared to the traditional PlayStation exclusives.
Returnal is a third-person shooter roguelike from developer Housemarque games. Despite PlayStation’s gigantic library, Returnal has established itself as one of the best games from the company. The developer has received numerous awards, praising the riveting gameplay and gorgeous visuals.
It would be a no-brainer to make a sequel after Returnal’s success, and it seems like Housemarque might be doing just that. A new job listing for a Senior Animation Programmer confirms that Housemarque is already working on their next project, which could be Returnal 2.
Returnal is explicitly mentioned in the job listing, and it also says the 3D animation systems from the previous title. The new role will be responsible for future 3D character animation. This could hint at a similarity between the two roles.
Furthermore, the listing also mentions Unreal Engine. Interestingly, Returnal was also based on the same Engine. This could be further evidence that the developer is working on a sequel to their critically acclaimed title from 2021.
While Returnal was developed using Unreal Engine 4, the future title could use Unreal Engine 5 and all the upgrades with the new version.
It would be hard to imagine the developer not working on a Returnal sequel after the IP’s success. Returnal has also received a few post-launch updates and additional content, indicating that the developer is dedicated to supporting the new IP. However, nothing is set in stone. Therefore, taking this information with a grain of salt would be wise.
Rumors have also pointed at a PC port for Returnal. PlayStation has been extremely successful with PC releases like Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War, so a Returnal PC release does not seem far-fetched.
Developer Housemarque has done an excellent job laying the foundations of a legendary IP, and expectations for their next project are through the roof. Going by the developer’s previous work, it would not be surprising to see them shatter all expectations.
