- Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has called Max Payne 3 one of his creative failures.
- He believes the shift away from the series’ noir style was a mistake.
- The developer still thinks Max Payne 3 was a great game that was held back by his writing.
Max Payne 3 is often considered one of Rockstar Games’ most underrated releases, largely because of how the game was quickly forgotten once GTA 5 came out.
Speaking on the game, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser noted that Max Payne 3 got a lot right in terms of design and other elements. However, he also noted that the game failed in the writing department.
Why it matters: The Max Payne series has been a fan-favorite for decades, but Max Payne 3 stands out from its predecessor due to how different it ended up being compared to the rest.

Dan Houser, Rockstar co-founder and writer on Max Payne 3, has said he considers the game a personal creative failure. Houser believes Rockstar Games mishandled the sequel by taking Max Payne too far from his original setting and tone.
This is because Max Payne started as a dark, snowy, noir-inspired action series from Remedy Entertainment. Its first two games leaned heavily into New York, graphic-novel storytelling.
Rockstar Games changed this formula completely, something that many fans still don’t like too much.
I got that completely wrong. I failed. The game is beautifully made, and it wasn’t as successful as it should have been.

Currently, Remedy Entertainment is remaking the original Max Payne titles, so it will be interesting to see how closely the developer sticks to the original games.
