QSSR Delivers Significantly Better Detail Levels; Analysts Praise PS5 AI Upscaling

AI Upscaling On The Base PS5 Is A Win For Sony And Developers!

Story Highlight
  • Sony has just introduced AI-based upscaling for the base PS5 with QSSR.
  • Testing in Marvel’s Wolverine shows a notable improvement in detail across distant objects, foliage, and character hair.
  • QSSR comes with more of a performance cost than temporal upscalers, but the image quality is quite a bit better.

PlayStation officially introduced its own proprietary upscaling for the PS5 Pro with PSSR, which was later refined into PSSR 2.0.

The gaming giant has now brought some of PSSR’s benefits to the base console with QSSR, an AI-based solution designed for the standard PS5 hardware. Recent testing shows that QSSR has a lot of potential.

Why it matters: The base PS5 was mainly limited to upscalers like FSR, which led to mixed results. QSSR presents developers with the opportunity to utilize machine learning for a cleaner output.

As pointed out in Digital Foundry’s analysis, QSSR delivers notable improvements in Marvel’s Wolverine.

When compared to Insomniac Games’ temporal solution (IGTI), QSSR resolves better detail across distant objects like trucks, fences, and in-game foliage. Wolverine himself also looks better when using QSSR, thanks to less noise in the character’s hair.

Similarly, QSSR offers a greater level of detail when comparing shots involving water, getting rid of the ghosting effect present in Insomniac Games’ upscaler. Ray-traced reflections also see an improvement with QSSR, improving the already-great reflections resolved by IGTI on the base PS5.

In terms of PSSR comparisons, the PS5 Pro-exclusive AI technology is said to be more capable at upscaling images at a lower cost to performance, though this may be due to how much more capable the PS5 Pro hardware is.

It is speculated that QSSR will help improve the GTA 6 experience on the base PS5, though Rockstar Games has yet to say anything on the matter. Anyhow, it will be interesting to see how other developers make the most of QSSR to improve image quality on the most popular PS5 hardware.

What do you think of QSSR? Have you tried it in Marvel’s Wolverine or Ghost of Yotei? Share in the comments below and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
