Activision’s Halo Reboot Reportedly Planned To Be Master Chief’s Origin Story

The Next Game Could Be Made In The COD's Infinity Ward Engine!

Story Highlight
  • Activision was originally considering 2 separate Halo projects: a free-to-play multiplayer and a campaign.
  • However, the idea was cancelled, and now a single full-fledged mainline entry is in development.
  • The next game could be developed in the Infinity Ward engine, based on the tested prototypes.

As part of Xbox’s great reset, Activision took over the Halo franchise’s development and multiple other first-party teams. The studio aims to create the greatest game under the IP so far, with ex-Blizzard boss Mike Ybarra calling this shift the ‘best news in a decade’ for fans.

Activision’s next game is rumored to reboot the franchise. Credible Halo insider Rebs Gaming now says his source claims the project will explore the origin story of Master Chief and will likely be a hard reboot.

Why it matters: The next Halo game could turn out to be an entirely different experience than what we have seen under Halo Studios, especially if the development team uses Call of Duty’s Infinity Ward engine instead of Unreal Engine 5.

Rebs reports that Activision is already building a development team for the Halo title, and it’s expected to be under Sledgehammer Games.

Activision’s original idea for the franchise was to work on two games: a free-to-play multiplayer and a campaign. It would have been a soft reboot that doesn’t follow Halo Infinite’s storyline but also doesn’t retcon existing lore.

they have heard that Activision is considering a full reboot and making a Master Chief origin story. This means we aren’t getting a direct Halo Infinite sequel, and at least some of Halo story will be rebooted.

Basic gameplay prototypes, such as player movement, were already being tested for both projects through Call of Duty’s Infinity Ward engine. However, plans have changed as ambitions have grown.

Activision now aims to work on a full-fledged mainline Halo experience, as The Hollywood Reporter also recently reported. Rebs is also confident the next Halo game is more likely to retcon at least some of the story.

Halo Activision Blizzard
Halo’s potential could finally be realized under Activision Blizzard.

Additionally, this mainline Halo title is also expected to use the Infinity Ward engine instead of UE5, based on the tested prototypes so far.
