Don't Count On AI-Generated Games Coming Anytime Soon!

Story Highlight
  • Ori developer Thomas Mahler says entire games made by AI are not happening anytime soon.
  • He believes games made entirely by AI will not appeal to anybody at all, stating that making a game that appeals to people is an art form itself.
  • The developer still believes AI will be very useful in the right hands.

The role of AI in game development has been the subject of many discussions. While most developers use generative AI in game production to some capacity today, some previously claimed that AI would be used to create full games soon.

A veteran developer has dissected these claims, claiming that this simply won’t be possible anytime soon.

Why it matters: Generative AI models have rapidly advanced, and they can now come up with gameplay demos that look very impressive.

Thomas Mahler, best known for his work on the Ori series as the Moon Studios CEO, has weighed in on the growing discussion around AI in game development. His main point is that although AI may be useful, the idea of entire games being produced by AI alone is still not realistic in the near future.

Mahler argues that most of the demos showcasing AI capabilities when it comes to creating games look awful. He believes those kinds of games would immediately fail on the market.

The Ori developer argues that creating a product people want to consume is nothing short of an art form itself. He says that most of the AI-generated content out there completely misses this part.

I see a lot of posts on here from people that are convinced that AI will build entire, polished games within the next few years, I find that quite unlikely.

As per Thomas Mahler, these tools can be incredibly useful, but they require the right talent to steer them in the right direction.

What do you think of the Ori developer’s assessment of generative AI and its uses in the gaming industry?
