Cyberpunk 2077 has had one of gaming’s most impactful comeback stories to date. Rivaling the likes of No Man’s Sky, the game effectively came back from a point of no return and made a place in the hearts of millions of fans.

A large part of this comeback was the Phantom Liberty expansion, which launched in 2023. Exactly three years after its release, director Pawel Sasko has reflected on the DLC’s release. He also noted that Phantom Liberty’s success does not erase the game’s botched launch.

Why it matters: Cyberpunk 2077 marked CDPR’s most anticipated release to date, but the game was nothing short of a disaster and ended up being a disappointment at launch.

Cyberpunk 2077’s quest director has admitted that the game’s post-launch accomplishments still do not wipe away the damage caused by its disastrous 2020 release.

Pawel Sasko’s latest post on Twitter looks back on the hardships the team went through following Cyberpunk 2077’s release and how it bounced back. In particular, the director described the experience as being similar to group therapy.

He outlined that working on Phantom Liberty and post-launch Cyberpunk 2077 was a huge learning experience for the entire team. Pawel Sasko also stated that despite the RPG’s rough launch, it has certainly earned its place today, and he hopes fans feel that way too.
