Todd Howard Doesn't Want Anyone Else Handling Elder Scrolls!

Story Highlight
  • The former Skyrim co-lead says Todd Howard is too protective of The Elder Scrolls for outside-led spin-offs.
  • He pointed to Fallout New Vegas as a model that likely would not happen with Bethesda’s RPG franchise.
  • The studio’s unwillingness to lend The Elder Scrolls to another team is exactly why The Elder Scrolls 6 has taken so long.

The Elder Scrolls and Fallout remain Bethesda’s most prized possessions, but while the latter has received spin-offs like New Vegas, the same cannot be said of the former. A former Elder Scrolls developer has recently discussed why this is so, claiming that Bethesda simply holds the series too close to its heart.

Why it matters: The wait for another Elder Scrolls title after Skyrim has been quite painful for many fans, with Skyrim now being over 15 years old.

Skyrim Is Still Quite Popular Despite Its Age

Speaking to FRVR, former Bethesda developer Kurt Kuhlmann said that The Elder Scrolls is unlikely to receive a Fallout New Vegas-style spin-off because Bethesda is too protective of the franchise.

He argued that Bethesda would not be comfortable handing The Elder Scrolls to another studio in the same way Fallout: New Vegas was developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Kuhlmann also noted that Todd Howard didn’t want competition between different Elder Scrolls titles.

Because fans have debated whether Obsidian’s work on Fallout is better than Bethesda’s, the latter simply doesn’t feel comfortable with another team handling The Elder Scrolls.

Todd, from my time there, he is very protective of it.

The one exception to this rule is Elder Scrolls Online, but it caters to those who enjoy online gameplay as opposed to single-player elements.

Bethesda is currently working on The Elder Scrolls 6, but the game is still a few years away. The team has also confirmed work on multiple Fallout titles, laying down a long-term roadmap for its biggest IPs.

What are your thoughts on Bethesda refusing spin-offs based on The Elder Scrolls?
