Nintendo is no stranger to going after hackers and pirates, especially due to the popular Nintendo Switch modding scene.

In recent years, the gaming giant has issued harsh punishments to those involved in mass distribution of Nintendo Switch games, and another such case has recently surfaced online.

Why it matters: Nintendo is the strictest of the three gaming giants when it comes to dealing with modding and piracy, especially since its last-generation hardware is easily susceptible to modding, emulation, etc.

Nintendo’s legal pressure against Switch piracy has produced another big result. According to VGC’s report, a court has ordered a Reddit moderator accused of widely pirating Switch games to pay Nintendo $4.5 million in damages.

Note that Nintendo filed a lawsuit against Redditor James Williams in 2024. After Williams failed to respond, the court granted Nintendo’s motion in full, arguing that the Redditor ignored the case despite being fully aware of the situation.

Nintendo states that Redditor was part of a large community of Switch pirates of nearly 200K online users. Although Williams was involved in the piracy of multiple games, Nintendo has asked to be paid $150,000 for 30 first-party titles each.

According to the judge, Nintendo’s demand isn’t an unrealistic one, especially after the gaming giant’s claims of unlawful distribution of hundreds of copyrighted Nintendo Switch games.

Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how Nintendo continues to deal with similar situations. The gaming giant has also implemented strict security within the Nintendo Switch 2, so the console has yet to be modded like its predecessor.
