Xbox announced its first round of layoffs under CEO Asha Sharma not too long ago. The gaming giant confirmed that it would pursue up to 3,200 job cuts as a result of restructuring, but new reports suggest that this won’t be the case.

Reports reveal that the job cuts will fall below the expected threshold of 3,200 employees.

Why it matters: Xbox has been relentless with its layoffs in the last few years, targeting both new and old employees in the wake of job cuts.

A report from Windows Central claims that Xbox’s layoffs will not reach the previously discussed 3,200 employee figure.

This is good news in the grand scheme of things, but Xbox’s job cuts have still impacted plenty of important developers across studios like id Software, Treyarch, and Halo Studios.

Microsoft will ultimately see 1,000+ developers leave its gaming division by the end of 2026. However, because the gaming giant has decided to opt for restructuring, the damage won’t be as big.

For the unaware, Xbox has decided to refine its management by pushing teams like Halo Studios under Activision’s umbrella and Obsidian Entertainment under Bethesda Softworks leadership.

Anyhow, because Xbox’s layoffs have been so brutal in the past, this is certainly a sliver of hope in an ultimately grim situation. Here’s hoping CEO Asha Sharma can navigate the restructuring to prevent such job cuts in the future.
