Xbox has officially announced the biggest change for Halo since the series’ handover from Bungie to 343 Industries.

Due to the ongoing Xbox reset, Activision is now taking over the franchise, and in what comes as a huge surprise, the publisher is establishing an entirely new team dedicated to the series. As part of its ambitions for Halo, Activision says that it hopes to create the series’ greatest game to date.

Why it matters: Halo Studios, formerly known as 343 Industries, has handled everything related to the series since 2012’s Halo 4. As such, this shake-up is nothing short of a huge deal for both this series and Xbox.

As per Rob Kostich, the current Activision President, Halo’s legacy is one the team is clearly aware of.

According to CharlieIntel’s report, Activision notes that its ambitions for the series line up with its reputation, and as a result of Halo’s prestige, the studio has laid out plans to make the “greatest Halo game ever.”

Our goal is clear: make the greatest Halo game ever, worthy of its universe and legacy.

Considering the team has titles like Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 3 to beat, this goal is certainly a big one. Activision also notes that it is currently working on building a team that can meet these goals in the future.

Therefore, fans might have to wait a while before these changes manifest in the form of a new Halo title. The shake-ups also lead to doubts about recent rumors regarding the series, including future remakes and standalone multiplayer games.

The good news is that Activision does have plenty of experience with first-person shooters. With the right leadership and formula, this transition could be the beginning of something truly exciting for Halo as a series.
