DLSS 5 Breathes New Life Into Old Games; Acts As Free Remaster

Expert Verified By

Will DLSS 5 Make Simple Game Remasters Completely Redundant?

Story Highlight
  • Nvidia DLSS 5 has brought major visual overhauls to older titles like Battlefield 3 and Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands.
  • The visual upgrade is similar to one gamers expect from game remasters in the modern era.
  • Not everyone is sold on the technology, with some calling it AI slop and a glorified shader mod.

Nvidia has launched DLSS 5 for all to try, and the neural rendering technology has led to very interesting results so far. Due to how different its output can sometimes be and the performance costs associated with DLSS 5, some feel that the technology shows that Nvidia has lost track of what DLSS was originally meant to be.

However, others have also admitted to liking its output. In particular, the technology can provide a huge visual uplift in older titles akin to a free remaster for said games.

Why it matters: DLSS 5 could revolutionize video game graphics if adopted on a wide scale, particularly due to how rapidly AI is becoming a part of modern development.

Battlefield 3 footage with DLSS 5 was recently shared on Twitter, and it’s hard not to be impressed by how the game looks.

DICE’s official work on Battlefield 3 has already aged gracefully for how old the game is, but injecting Nvidia’s latest technology into the game leads to nearly photorealistic visuals.

Similarly, the technology leads to better-than-expected results in a game like Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands.

Here, DLSS 5 appears to accentuate the game’s darker tones, giving the title a modern look that would pass for a decent remaster with some additional tweaking.

These are just a few of the examples that highlight how DLSS 5 can effectively act as a pseudo-remaster for various games when it works well. Even a title like Modern Warfare 3 from 2011 shows notable visual improvements when running with Nvidia’s neural rendering.

Of course, the DLSS 5 output isn’t perfect, and many are still not fond of what it implies for the future of games. Some have called it a glorified filter that isn’t too different from the shader mods that many PC gamers have been using for decades now.

What do you think about DLSS 5 now that it has been available for a while and tested across multiple games? Share your thoughts in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
